Jason Tyler Grace: On the Road in Melbourne, Australia Part VII

You arrive to Melbourne 16 hours after flying leaving Saigon, four and a half hours of which were spent in a Chinese airport where you ate beef-noodle soup that would soon destroy your stomach and have you gassing people out on the plane. The fat pimply, greasy Chinese 20-something sitting next to you keeps drinking milk, after milk, after milk, chugging them down as you fart into the cushion trying to drive the smell deep into foam oblivion… Before landing the flight attendants walk by and hand out napkins to cover your faces while they spray down the cabin in some disinfectant to rid the plane of dangers to Australia’s agriculture. You watch the stewardess walk by spraying the overhead bins and the bathrooms with what looked like air freshener. You fart some more beef noodle gas into the cushion, and the fat kid next to you is sitting there with his mouth open, burps up his milk. Welcome to Melbourne… (more…)

Chris Trevino: Gods and Warriors Book Preview

Gods and Warriors

This is a fitting title for Chris Trevino’s first book. His tattoos often depict these precise themes. But more notably, the title is actually fitting for Chris himself. In many ways he embodies the eternal qualities of the warrior hero or the deified persona of an ancient culture’s history; in short, a modern knight in quest for the mythic grail. His accomplishments, perhaps in a slightly older culture and rendered symbolically in the romantic style, could very well be the foundation of myth. (more…)

Artist Profile: Beppe Strambini (VIDEO)

By Jeff Rassier:
Beppe is one of those rare tattooers that learned to tattoo without any direct local influences. Because of this, he developed a style that is all his own. His tattoos are rooted in the classic styles but developed in a different way than most of the tattooers I know. He is so devoted to tattooing in all he does that whenever I visit him it amazes me how many days a week he works and how many hours he puts into his drawings. [Video on expanded page.]  (more…)

Matt Amey: Self-Portrait Painting (VIDEO)

In 2008, I returned to college to study Fine Art at the University of Delaware. In December of 2009 I created this self portrait, in oil paint, over the span of 40-plus hours of painting. I constructed the stretcher bars out of one-by-three inch poplar and stretched the five-by-six foot canvas over the structure. Two coats of white gesso later and I was ready to paint. Crash Hits the Streets of New York

By Crash

Well, my New York trip was a little hectic. I managed (with lots of help and cooperation) to get around 10 interviews filmed in four days, while having a pretty good time in the process… (more…)

New York City Tattoo Convention: On the Road in Brooklyn? (VIDEO)

Of all the things I’ve lost, I miss my mind the most… New York has missing pieces of my memory buried in her blanket of billboards, bright lights and broken glass… The end of the weekend had a very Fear-and-Loathing-in-Las-Vegas feel to it… There are cell phone camera-flashes, and small chunks of larger events replaying in a non-descriptive manner in my mind. I can recall middle pieces that have no end and beginnings that have no middle or ending… They only thing I’m 100 percent positive on; I had a good time… I think? [Video on expanded page] (more…)

The Biggest Tattoo Convention in the World? (VIDEO)

When people think of “big” tattoo conventions there are a few that come to mind; London, Milan, Ink ‘n Iron… But just like Darth Vader said in Empire, “There is another…”

As unlikely as it sounds, the tattoo convention held in Taiwan this Aug 5th –7th 2011, may actually be the biggest tattoo convention in the world? [Video link on expanded page] (more…)

Tattoo Artist Magazine Book (Issues 1-5) Pre-Order Now Available

As you may know, the first five issues of TAM have become highly sought after and sales have recently been limited to full-set orders only due to our dwindling inventory. With this in mind we created TAM Volume 1, a book that consists of issues 1-5. The response to the prototype of this book at tattoo conventions all over the world has been unanimous, “We want this book!”

1st Annual Lake County Tattoo Convention in Lakeport, California

Who doesn’t like a tattoo convention at a casino? Well, if you don’t you are probably a communist… Anyway, Kent and I decided to kick off the TAM West Coast road trip (look for more on this later) by going to the Konocti Vista Casino to the first tattoo convention in Lakeport, CA. (more…)

Music: Red Fang Interview (VIDEO)

By Rose Riot

Summer is here, and that means music festival season. One such festival that I am looking forward to attending in the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest. Mayhem will be rolling through Atlanta in August and I will be prepared for the heat of the sun and the heat coming off of the stages. One of the bands I’m most looking forward to seeing is a band from Portland, Oregon called, Red Fang. I had a nice little conversation with the guitar player and vocalist Bryan Giles… [Video on expanded page] (more…)

Fresno Tattoo Convention: On the Road in California

By John

This post will be much like the Fresno convention, short and sweet! The Fresno convention is one of those rare two-day  shows that has all the talent and pageantry of a three-day convention, without the Friday blues that many of us are accustomed to.  There are very few shows where you don’t hear at least one person say, “Friday was slow… I’ll kill it on Saturday.” So Fresno just cuts out the Friday complaints and gets right to it on Saturday… [Video on expanded page] (more…)

Tattooers for Japan (UPDATE)

By Craig Driscoll

The biggest earthquake to shake Japan, since records began almost 150 years ago, hit the country’s northeast coast. That and the tsunami that followed has devastated the island nation of Japan. Japanese influence on modern-day tattooing is undeniably vast. The least we can do is some tattooing in return… (more…)

Lighthouse Supply, Swimming with the Sharks

By Waldo Del Rocca

A couple of months ago I was speaking Seth (Ciferri) who put me in contact with Crash, I really wanted to get Tattoo Artist Magazine available here to South Africa  for the sheer quality of the publication and the content. Funny enough, couple of weeks later Kent contacted me and asked if I would be interested in reselling TAM through Lighthouse Supply.

I jumped straight on it and we worked something out and got the magazines down here. If that wasn’t rad enough, couple of weeks ago I got a e-mail from Kent asking if I wanted to write for TAM’s blog, I started laughing and honestly thought he was just messing with me…

Rollo & Me Comic #3

The “Rollo & Me” strip is a series of stories told by Keith Underwood and illustrated by Dan Henk which appear regularly in Tattoo Artist Magazine. They chronicle Keith’s experiences living with and working alongside one of tattooing’s greatest icons of the 20th century- Mike ‘Rollo Banks’ Malone. Mike departed this life in 2007 but these stories represent Keith’s healing process and are figuratively supposed to occur on the couch of his therapist.
Enjoy. There’s more to come. [Full comic on expanded page]

Dawn Cooke: Nothing is Sacred in the Market Place

Lately there has been concern about bloggers taking artists’ pictures without permission. I have been paying strict attention to this. When Frank worked for me at Depot Town there was one blogger, in particular, who was taking some of his images from Facebook and using it in his blog. (I won’t name this particular blog because this isn’t the important part.) Now, there are a few more out there since then… (more…)

Tattoo Artist Magazine Issue #25: 2011 SXSW Review

By Rose Riot

South By South West (SXSW) is a 10-day film, music and interactive conference that happens every year in Austin, Texas since 1987. It has been the career starting place for many musicians and a place for bigger name musicians to play for intimate crowds. SXSW has been on my “bucket list” for many years.

My only reservation was that I would need to have help with the 15-plus-hour drive. As long as I could get help, I would do it. Luckily, I found the world’s best co-pilot, my friend Jen. I picked her up on Tuesday morning and we set out for what could be no less than a rock and roll adventure. (more…)
