By Dave Allen
Photos by Jayme Ford

I’m just a hard-working tattoo artist that no one’s heard of.  And to tell you the truth, I don’t mind slaving away in anonymity. But I guess when certain circumstances move you to act there’s no telling what might happen…

Waldo Del Rocca: Four Weeks in Africa with Thomas Morgan and Shon Lindauer

By Waldo Del Rocca
Thomas Morgan (Spotlight Tattoo) and Shon Lindauer (formerly of Thicker Than Water) recently travelled to South Africa… The schedule: One week in Cape Town, one week in Durban, one  week in Johannesburg and then one last week back in Cape Town. Thomas and Shon got here on the 10th and 11th of June, for me this was some nerve wrecking stuff (only knowing them online, following and respecting their work) not knowing who they are, as reputation sometimes proceeds. I didn’t know what to expect…

Phil Kyle: Perfect Your Craft and Destroy the Circus

By Phil Kyle
It’s hard to know where to start here seeing the state of things… So just going to play it by ear and have a bit of a rant while stating proper facts on things happening to our craft… not industry. An “industry” is a factory in China making and selling shitty equipment to sell on eBay…

Sullen Clothing: 21 Questions with Myke Chambers

Courtesy of Sullen Clothing: A few days ago I did our popular 21 questions with one of the coolest down to earth guys Myke Chambers. Myke is a part of our elite Sullen Art Collective team that consists of some of the best artists. This was a fun interview to do because Myke is so into Sullen and helping out us out. Sullen just launched a new tee design called the Myke Chambers which is his first artist collaboration piece. Myke is a huge fan of Traditional Americana imagery with tons of color and bold lines which is something we are a huge fan of as well, there are so many great black and grey artists, but when someone comes to us with awesome color work we are all over it… [Interview and pictures on expanded page]

TAM MUSIC: Interview with Mike Dean from Corrosion of Conformity

By Rose Riot
Corrosion of Conformity (C.O.C.) the legendary hardcore band from North Carolina with almost 30 years history, has gone through many changes and members. Currently, three of  C.O.C.’s founding members Mike Dean, Woody Weatherman and Reed Mullin are on tour.

The the three-piece C.O.C. is doing a setlist that is made up mostly of the Animosity album. I was able to catch up with Mike Dean before the C.O.C. show in Atlanta at The Earl and ask him a few questions about the tour, controversy about the bands changing sound and his lack of tattoos…

Seattle Tattoo Expo: On the Road in Washington

By Nicki Kasper
My trip to Seattle started a little rough… I was trying to get to my hotel to pick up all my boxes and drop them off at the venue before they closed at 7 p.m. but apparently there are two Roy Streets in Seattle, and my navigation system had other plans for me. After I got all the boxes loaded into my car, I made my way to Super Genius for Damon Conklin’s pre-funk party…

Crystal Morey Talks to Japanese Artists About Their Country’s Recent Disasters (VIDEO)

By Crystal Morey
When asked to do some interviews over here in Japan for the TAM Blog I immediately thought of profiling Kishi San from 56 Tattoo in Shibuya, Tokyo. In the tragic aftermath of the quake in Japan’s Tohoku prefecture, Kishi-San immediately went into action contacting his immense web of tattooers and organizing his motorcycle club, the 56 Syndicate, to assist in the still ongoing struggle. I sat down with him and Ako (owner of Ghetto Culture and brother to everyone in the Tokyo underground scene) for a coffee…

Dan Henk: Why Tattoo School is Such a Bad Idea

By Dan Henk
Looking from the outside in, tattooing doesn’t look that difficult. If it’s not that difficult, you learn the basics and you are good to go, right? Hell, if half the people on TV can do it, an actual school should be able to teach the essentials in two weeks! College courses take a good four years. If you want to go into a more advanced profession, you are in for an even longer ride. I don’t think anyone would trust a doctor that went to a two-week school…

Rollo & Me Comic #6

The “Rollo & Me” strip is a series of stories told by Keith Underwood and illustrated by Dan Henk which appear regularly in Tattoo Artist Magazine. They chronicle Keith’s experiences living with and working alongside one of tattooing’s greatest icons of the 20th century- Mike ‘Rollo Banks’ Malone. Mike departed this life in 2007 but these stories represent Keith’s healing process and are figuratively supposed to occur on the couch of his therapist. Enjoy. There’s more to come. Guen Douglas: How to Properly Examine a Tattoo Portfolio

By Guen Douglas
A tattoo artist’s portfolio should play a vital role in how you choose your artist. A portfolio is the way we showcase our work. It is not the end-all-be-all… I have met plenty of fantastic tattooers that rely on publications and word of mouth too, and they don’t update their portfolios as methodically as others. There are many factors that should go into choosing your artist and all of them are important, but for today I’m going to explain how a customer should look through a tattoo portfolio…

Tyler B. Murphy: Hand Poked Tattoos on Die Antwoord

By Tyler B. Murphy
My mate Ryan got stabbed in the back outside a bar in my old neighborhood. They snatched his friends handbag and left him thinking that he had been punched on his right shoulder-blade. Moments later as the blood cooled, he felt the wetness, and realised the truth behind the sharpened steel in the punch…
