The recently Grammy-nominated, Atlanta-local Mastodon, a band that found its name based on guitarist Bill Kelliher’s Star Wars Bantha tattoo, celebrated in style with their network of friends and families during “The Missing Link” show at the Tabernacle Dec. 2. Of the opening acts, Atlanta’s most recent conglomeration of metal and psychedelia mix in MonstrO with Mastodon singer/bassist Troy Sanders’ brother Kyle on bass…
Tiger! Tiger! includes Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor’s wife Susanne Gibboney on bass. The crowd welcomed these bands kin to the headliner, and further loved the playful antics of Red Fang and the high energy of Dillinger Escape Plan. The Black Lips, whose style mixes punk with an almost European garage sound, finished the mini festival organized for this final tour date only.
Kelliher said of the mini festival, “All the bands were together in the same town at the same time so we wanted to throw it all together and have a huge show…a mini festival we’re calling ‘The Missing Link’. We did one before in California a year and a half ago.”
After opening acts MonstrO, Tiger Tiger, Red Fang, Dillinger Escape Plan, and The Black Lips warmed well the crowd, kaleidoscopic flashes bounced off the background screen and into the ecstatic audience eager to welcome Mastodon home.
