Courtesy of Raking Light: Raking Light Projects is an online contemporary art gallery that specializes in the sale of original art and collectible prints created by skilled tattoo artists. Based in Los Angeles, CA, the online gallery exhibits artwork from an array of internationally recognized artists with a background in or relationship to tattooing. Raking Light Projects went live in March 2012 with an exhibition of works created exclusively for the website by artists Guy Aitchison, Jondix, Timothy Hoyer, Bert Krak, Carlos “WENT” Rodriguez and Derrick Snodgrass…
Founded by Curator/Creative Director and veteran tattoo artist Eddy Deutsche and entrepreneur Andrew Fingerhut, Raking Light Projects aims to bridge the creative values of tattooing and fine art. By providing high-quality original artwork and collectible prints from some of today’s most talented tattoo artists, Raking Light Projects will serve as a platform where art appreciators can come to fuse their love of tattoos, visual culture and creative expression.
A carefully curated and frequently evolving exhibition of work is available for viewing and purchase. Underscoring their commitment to quality curatorial programming, Raking Light Projects also emphasizes a meticulous, artist-centric approach to print production. Co-founder Andrew Fingerhut says:
From a print production perspective, we do not take a one–size-fits all approach to any of the work we publish. We work closely with the artists as they create the source material artwork and then consult with traditional and digital printers to craft a specific production plan for each print we put out. We are proud to support traditional, handmade printmaking techniques and work with a number of master printers to publish the highest-quality prints that we can.We also embrace select innovative applications of digital printmaking, allowing us to offer stunning prints at accessible prices.
The emphasis on print production is intended to support the artist’s creative process. Guiding production allows the artist to focus on creative expression while ensuring that their work is properly suited for the specific technique used to create the print. All prints are released as single editions with limited edition sizes. The artwork used to create the print is made specifically to serve as source material for the print, is canceled or destroyed once the print has been produced and will not be sold. All prints are signed by the artist and include a Certificate of Authenticity, which documents the print production process.
The idea for Raking Light Projects unfolded during conversations that Eddy and Andrew had during the tattooing process. A longtime art enthusiast and collector, the walls of Eddy’s tattoo studio are covered with paintings and other original artwork. Desperate for a distraction from the pain of being tattooed, Andrew would engage Eddy in lengthy dialogues about the background and artistic merit of these works. Gradually and organically the idea for creating an advocate-oriented platform for tattoo artists to pursue their creative aspirations became a reality. Says Andrew, “the initial concept for Raking Light has changed quite a bit since our early conversations, and I expect we will continue to evolve as we move forward.”
Part of what makes Raking Light Projects unique is their desire to embrace audiences beyond the tattoo community. To expand reach, they will be developing both online and real world marketing initiatives to create new exposure opportunities for their artist’s work. Expanding the existing base while pursuing new audiences interested in art is an end goal for Creative Director Deutsche:
I don’t consider the fine art and tattoo community as separate entities; I tend to see the opportunity for us in finding people who are interested in the artwork and artists that we work with. This is independent of tattoos. We want to reach people interested in art.
