It’s a comic geek’s dream come true! This weekend one of the most anticipated movies of the year hits theaters – Deadpool.
If you haven’t heard about this film you must be living under a rock or entirely off the grid. Even the biggest comic book naysayers have been inundated with the phenomenial marketing job that has been carried out by this film. It stars Ryan Reynolds, who’s been trying to get the movie made for over a decade, and it stands as a testament to the power of comic book fanboys/girls and the internet community as a whole.
For those who don’t know, this movie was never meant to see the light of day. While Deadpool may be one of the most beloved comic book characters of all time, he’s also one of the crassest, most deranged psychopaths ever dreamt up by comic writers. FOX, the studio that owns the rights to the Deadpool character because he largely exists within the realm of the X-Men, had so little faith in the comic portrayal of “the merc with the mouth” that they completely butchered his character and origin story in X-Men Origins: Wolverine – much to the dismay of fans everywhere.
A little over a year ago, some test footage for the movie leaked online and fans went berserk. FOX got so much pressure to greenlight the movie that they caved and allowed it to be made however Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller desired. That’s why the fans are getting the first R-rated superhero movie ever, which any fan can tell you had to be done in order to do the comic and the character justice.
Deadpool opens this weekend and the rave reviews have already started pouring in, with many reviewers saying it’s one of the most unique and hysterical movies they’ve seen in a long time.
