Surfing has a deep history in ancient Polynesian culture that’s unfortunately unrecorded, leaving historians with no clues as to when it first began. What we do know is that British explorers first observed surfers while traveling through Tahiti in 1767. Surfing actually pre-dates Hawaiians and eastern Polynesians by over a thousand years.
Professional surfing contests started in 1975 and, unlike many other sports, it began with its first professional female athlete during the same year. It has since been looked at as both a sport and a calming oceanic past time, and we’re celebrating it today with its own tattoo gallery.
