Myke Chambers: Idiocracy?

I was talking with a friend a little while back about the state of tattooing today, comparing it with how things were just 15 or 20 years ago. He made a really good point… A lot of people say, “Yeah tattooing going mainstream sucks but now there are more people getting tattooed so we’re all making a lot more money.”
But he then reminded me that yeah, 15 years ago there weren’t as many people getting tattooed but there also weren’t as many tattooers either, so anyone that wanted a tattoo didn’t have a whole lot of choices. Today there are sometimes a hundred shops in a city or maybe even upwards of 300 in a big city… (more…)

Connecticut’s legislators are about to do something crazier than Mike Tyson’s face tattoo: create a state licensing scheme for tattoo artists.
At first glance, of course, the idea seems perfectly sensible. If my kid makes the dumb decision to get a tattoo, the parlor should at least be regulated in some way, the logic goes. Tattooing is spreading like a wild-fire! I’m not sure if it’s because all the tattoo shows out nowadays, or the ease of buying tattoo equipment. Whatever it may be, the industry is being saturated with tattooers, and there is a one main thing many of these tattooers are overlooking beside the respect for the craft. I’m talking about the artwork itself. What do tattooers and their clients see as custom art, flash and theft of artwork? It is down to the wire, folks. Four contestants are left in the game show of extreme skill and ability to see who is going to be named Best Ink. They must pay income tax on $100,000, and appear on the cover of Tattoo Magazine. HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA, “extreme skill!” I crack myself up sometimes! And Tattoo Magazine? I haven’t picked up this rag in a long time, but when I did, it had some of the crappiest tattoos out there. Back in the day, this wonderfully professional publication contained construction paper pages of black and white photos of color tattoos. Apparently, it has improved somewhat over the years, relying more on artists’ submissions than submissions by people with their own homemade tats… (more…)

Picture this hippy who is tuned in and dropped-out. He has a huge goofy dog and hangs out with this jock, the jock’s girlfriend, and his girlfriend’s bookish friend. He wears the same green shirt, brown bell bottoms and combat boots every day. He must be high as a kite, because he loves to eat dog treats and thinks his dog actually talks. Not in the normal way that someone talks to their dog and the dog reacts with jumping, whining or rolling over. I mean the dog actually talks back. This dude’s friends seem to be just like fucking Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote: trouble always seems to follow them wherever they go, and he is too stoned to figure out that he may not want to hang around these squares any longer. Crystal Morey: Horibenny (Part II)

Horibenny is one of my favorite monsters. Odder than bacon with legs, he oozes with creative zealotry and possesses an indiscriminate passion for life that is contagious. Benny is one of the first round-eyes to be given and to complete a formal tattoo apprenticeship here in Japan, and by this I mean, he cooked, fetched and lived for his sempai for over four years… A far cry from the ‘two week a year drop in to study and pay money’ apprenticeship awarded to many gaijin deshi these days.
Benny is an accomplished painter, his tattoo work is delicate yet powerful, it often embodies the Japanese tenet that less is more, and his earnest demeanor only lends to his accomplishments as an artists. Ever the student, Ben works his ass of on a daily basis to learn more and push himself further and I’ve had the pleasure of watching him make significant artistic advancements over the past few years. He is not unlike one of those wind-up toys you point and they take off pointedly in one direction… only Ben’s nose is pointed at the moon and with his passion it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he got there… (Click here to read Part I)

This week’s show was humdrum and tiresome. It is a chore to watch this poorly produced, sadly directed piece of shit. I could edit better in iMovie than these cats can with their high-dollar editing studio. This week’s focus was on realism. For the flash challenge, the troupe was taken to a side-street where, out of nowhere, this clearly staged accident-slash-gun fight happened right in front of them. The contestants were supposed to draw a “hyper-photo-realistic” rendition of it. It was just a big advertisement for the new Fast and Furious 6 movie. Lame… (more…)
