Facebook Allows Mastectomy Photos: Tattooed Model In Controversial Picture Speaks Out

By Beth Greenfield (Original story appears at Yahoo Shine.) After a storm of controversy, Facebook officially changed its policy on the posting of mastectomy photos, making it clear on Wednesday that they are now permitted. And that’s been welcome news to the women behind the once-banned photos, who have called it a victory for their effort to make the truth about breast cancer visual…  Read More »

Victor Farinelli: Best Ink Season II Season Finale (Episode 10)

By Victor Farinelli  In the words of the dead, drug addled rock star Jim Morrison, “This is the end, beautiful friend, the end.” Yes folks, this pop-culture game show dubbed “Best Ink Season II” has reached its final episode. What started off as a study in mediocrity, slowly digressed into a judge’s vehicle in auto-fellatio pseudo-fame. If the item that is to be fellatioed could be found, that is…  Read More »

Legislators Do Their Best Mike Tyson on Tattoos

By  Heath W. Fahle (Story originally appears at: http://www.ctnewsjunkie.com.) Connecticut’s legislators are about to do something crazier than Mike Tyson’s face tattoo: create a state licensing scheme for tattoo artists. At first glance, of course, the idea seems perfectly sensible. If my kid makes the dumb decision to get a tattoo, the parlor should at least be regulated in some way, the logic goes. Worrying about the kid is legitimate: one in three Americans under 30 have a tattoo, according to recent surveys, and the number is expected to grow… Read More »

Art Theft

By David Palacios Tattooing is spreading like a wild-fire! I’m not sure if it’s because all the tattoo shows out nowadays, or the ease of buying tattoo equipment. Whatever it may be, the industry is being saturated with tattooers, and there is a one main thing many of these tattooers are overlooking beside the respect for the craft. I’m talking about the artwork itself. What do tattooers and their clients see as custom art, flash and theft of artwork? There is a huge lack of originality and a spike in theft of artwork with all these new tattooers and we need to clarify what the boundaries are. Yes there are boundaries… Read More »

Victor Farinelli: Best Ink Season II (Episode 9)

By Victor Farinelli  It is down to the wire, folks. Four contestants are left in the game show of extreme skill and ability to see who is going to be named Best Ink. They must pay income tax on $100,000, and appear on the cover of Tattoo Magazine. HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA, “extreme skill!” I crack myself up sometimes! And Tattoo Magazine? I haven’t picked up this rag in a long time, but when I did, it had some of the crappiest tattoos out there. Back in the day, this wonderfully professional publication contained construction paper pages of black and white photos of color tattoos. Apparently, it has improved somewhat over the years, relying more on artists’ submissions than submissions by people with their own homemade tats… Read More »

Knives & Needles: Tattooer Deb Yarian

By Brynne Palmer I have been so fortunate to meet some amazing people in the tattoo industry, and one of them I really look up to is Debra. She’s been tattooing for longer than I’ve been alive, and her accomplishments in her work and family life are truly impressive. Her demeanor is so sweet and comforting, when she tattooed me at the last SFO convention I felt like we were just old friends having a lunch date! When she told me she would like to contribute to our blog, I was so excited to get more of a glimpse into her life and family, and how she seamlessly balances the two. Deb, thank you for sharing with us; and for doing all you do as a tattooer, wife, mother and grandmother!  Read More »
