Aubrey Trufant: The Rome Experience 2012

By Aubrey Trufant
First and foremost, I would love to thank Daniele “Ceyen” Hoang of Psycho Tattoo for extending the invitation and giving my brother Alex and myself an opportunity to come tattoo and explore Roma, Italia together. I would also like to extend great thanks to Francesco Giamblanco for his exceptional tour guide work and for his undying patience and love as a co-host. The welcome was warm and easy, as they were eager to keep us entertained, busy tattooing and fed! It seemed to come all so effortlessly, their actions spoke in volumes and resonated throughout the duration of our trip and experience with them. We appreciate you!  (more…)

Health Issues With Tattooing (Marcus Kuhn)

By Petri Aspvik

Petri Aspvik: What type of physical problem have you encountered do to tattooing?

Marcus Kuhn: After 20 years I have pain in my number 11 acupuncture point just southeast of my right scapula as a result of the long swoop of lining and the repetitive pulse of the mag work. After four hours my shoulder becomes congested and starts to fill with fluid. like a nose when you are congested with the flu. The body is responding to the inflammation of the tissue by sending fluid to the area. At night my shoulder sometimes pulses with pain… The fluid takes three hours or more to drain. I have also lost a register of my hearing from the frequency of the ultrasonics and the running machines…  (more…)

Sailor Jerry: Chris Trevino Hold Fast (VIDEO)

Courtesy of Salior Jerry: Chris Trevino is an expert in traditional Japanese tattooing who earned the nickname “Horimana” after studying for five years under the legendary master Horiyoshi III. His elaborate, full-body representations of Asian symbology remind us of the later works by Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins aka Horismoku. Trevino now runs Perfection Tattoo in Austin, TX which was founded by Bob Moreau in the late 70s… (more…)

Star of Texas Tattoo Revival: On the Road in Austin, Texas

By Nicki Kasper
I was excited when I was asked to work the Austin show. I hadn’t been to Texas, and was looking forward to checking out the city. After a full-body search courtesy of Portland airport security, a long flight and a cab ride that almost sent me flying through the windshield, I was happy to get checked into my hotel room…

Daniel Albrigo: Interview With Musical Guru “Knick” of Bro Safari (VIDEO)

By Daniel Albrigo
Over the last couple of years, my musical interests have changed, like they have many times over the course of my life and career.
A few years ago I was listening to mostly Reggae, Dancehall and tropically influenced music. After a while, this led right back into my interest in electronic music. Throughout high school and my early college years, my older brother went to a lot of parties, raves, skate demos, graffiti expos; all of which influenced and sparked my interest in art. It’s easy for me to say that both music and art went hand-in-hand from day one.

Lately, I have been listening to a lot of Hip-Hop, Dancehall, Bass music and Electronic Dance music. During the process of finding new producers and DJs to listen to, I’ve come to realize, like other genres of music, there is a notable interest in tattooing from many big name musicians and DJs. Even one of our own, Billy “The Gent” from Tattoo Paradise in Washington, D.C. is a music producer who is well on his way to becoming a major player in the scene.

As the stars align, (the way they strangely do on my daily path) I have been fortunate enough to be able to connect with a few of these people and over the next couple of TAM Blog posts, I will be interviewing them and introducing you to some brand new music.

My first interview is with veteran Bass music all-star, Nick Weiller. More commonly known as “Knick” from the legendary American Drum and Bass outfit Evol Intent, as well as being half of mash-up group, Ludachrist. Knick is currently making waves in the indie dance world under his newest moniker, Bro Safari. This is a good fit for our lead-off interview, being that Knick has a love for tattoos, music and is generally a great guy to sit down and chat with… [Interview and hilarious video on expanded page]

Aubrey Trufant: Tattoo Giants of Texas Part II (Tony Hundahl)

By Aubrey Trufant
It gives me great pleasure today to be writing the continuation for one of Austin’s finest tattoo shops, Rock of Ages. A shop that has set a high standard for quality tattooing, with style and flare. The knowledge of the craft and the respect for tattoo history resonate throughout the shop with original artwork and vintage paintings. The positive creative energy and work ethic of Rock of Ages proves to be exemplary. I’m happy to have had the opportunity to talk one of Texas’ tattoo giants, the very talented, the infamous, Tony Hundahl…

Aubrey Trufant: Tattoo Giants of Texas Part I (Steve Byrne)

By Aubrey Trufant
Austin, Texas is a vast melting pot filled with all kinds of food, entertainment, culture/counter-culture and lots of art. Austin has been home to many great tattoo artists, past and present. The talent in this city alone is overwhelming but I spent some of my time at Rock of Ages Tattoo (ROA). The ROA team consists of co-owners Tony Hundahl and Steve Byrne, supported by Jay Chastain and Bobby Padron. They live and breathe tattooing, which has established Rock of Ages as one of the best shops in Austin.

Keith Morris Talks About Music, Punk Rock and His New Band Off!

By Rose Riot
Keith Morris is known as one of the godfathers of American Punk. He is responsible for fronting two of the most crucial bands in the genre, Black Flag and The Circle Jerks. His latest band, Off! is creating a stir among fans young and old. The word on the streets is that Off! is the real punk rock deal. Having seen them recently at SXSW, I would agree. I felt honored that I was granted an interview with Keith, a man who has a lot to say and some great stories to tell… (more…)

Artist Profile: Chris Trevino (VIDEO)

By Ed Hardy:
I first met Chris Trevino when he and his then-partner, Shawn Degan, came to San Francisco in about 1992 to talk with me about getting some work done. He had not been tattooing very long at that time but Chris’ enthusiasm and ideas were off the charts… [Video and pictures on expanded page] (more…)

Chris Trevino: Gods and Warriors Book Preview

Gods and Warriors

This is a fitting title for Chris Trevino’s first book. His tattoos often depict these precise themes. But more notably, the title is actually fitting for Chris himself. In many ways he embodies the eternal qualities of the warrior hero or the deified persona of an ancient culture’s history; in short, a modern knight in quest for the mythic grail. His accomplishments, perhaps in a slightly older culture and rendered symbolically in the romantic style, could very well be the foundation of myth. (more…)
