Story and photos by Marco Annunziata
Jonathan Shaw couldn’t have use better words to introduce Pogo: “Michael was born in a circus tent on the outskirts of Guadalajara, Mexico. The bastard offspring of an itinerant Chicharon farmer and a mentally challenged Tattooed Lady, young Pogo became intrigued with the art of tattooing from an early age. After seeing two pigs copulating behind an abandoned brassiere factory, his first tattoo, inspired by that memorable event, was a surprisingly realistic rendition of a pair of naughty porkers, encircled by a banner reading, MAKIN’ BACON… (more…)

Courtesy of NZ On Screen: We have just added to our website Signatures of the Soul, the 1984 documentary fronted by Peter Fonda (directed by New Zealander Geoff Steven) that tracks the art of tattooing from New Zealand, through Samoa and the East L.A. and San Francisco scenes (including interviews with Ed Hardy and Bob Roberts) and on to Japan.

Interview by Brian Seghers
Brian Seghers: If you could go back in time to any era, or to work with somebody, or somewhere, where would you like to go? Have you ever thought about that?
Isaac Fainkujen: Yeah, I think for me the era that’s most interesting is kind of the tattoo renaissance that took place in and around the Bay area in the 70s and the 80s with Ed Hardy, Bob Roberts, Greg Irons, Eddy Deutsche and people like those guys that started to push the boundaries of what was okay and what wasn’t okay to do in a tattoo…

Sitting with Thom and listening to a few of his stories each morning was a real treat.
The first morning I asked him what he was doing…”Are you people-watching?”
“Lady-watching,” he said, with a wry grin.

DeVita "Lady Watching" in the morning
DeVita also sold some of his art (which we will soon be featuring on the TAM site) and he did several tattoos on some devoted tattooers over the weekend. (It was the first time I’d seen him wear gloves!)
