(Interview by Chad Koeplinger)

Chad Koeplinger: What about stylistically? The way that you tattoo is pretty fucking unique looking, I think. You can tell it’s one of your tattoos. You have a certain look to them. I know the magazine does like to talk a little bit about technique so we can get into that. But first things first, is there or was there someone’s tattooing that you saw that was maybe the light bulb that clicked for the way you’ve developed your style? Was there some influence with anyone, or was it just kind of something that happened and you went that way?

*UPDATE* True South: Jordan Teear Relief Party

Story by Aaron (Tex) Finnin and party photos by Casey Keener:
One month ago Jordan Teear and I were high-fiving in celebration of his first 24-hour Friday 13th super party completion. It was to kick off our long-awaited 4,000 mile summer ride from Los Angles to New York City to meet up with our buddy Oliver Peck. We spent the next 48-hours recovering from messed up sleeping schedules and wrenching the final details on our bikes before heading east. That Sunday the 15th of July the absolute worst wrench was thrown into our adrenaline plan. “We didn’t even make it to the freeway,” became Jordan’s favorite line as he chuckled and told the story of his broken legs and ankles numerous times followed by one of his token light-hearted jokes over the next three weeks… (more…)

Valerie Vargas Article Preview for Tattoo Artist Magazine Issue #31

Interview By Chad Koeplinger

Chad Koeplinger: Who are some of the tattoo artists that you were interested in at that point? What were you looking at tattoo-wise? What was blowing your mind?

Valerie Vargas: At that point I don’t think I became fully aware of people that I like now until I already started my apprenticeship, because that’s when I was allowed to have a look through the books that for me at the time were way too expensive -I couldn’t afford them. And my boss had all of the Tattootimes. He never looked at them anymore but they were up on the shelf and any time it was quiet I’d have a look. I became more aware of Ed Hardy and more of the West Coast kind of guys. But even then I was still struggling to remember names, I just knew the work. I remember some backpieces that are still pretty awesome. And it was also through my friendship with Stewart in the beginning that he was really on it. He knew who everybody was, what they were doing, and he was totally stoked about everything, and he taught me a fair bit about it…  (more…)

Oliver Peck: On the Road in Ireland at Allstar Tattoo

By Oliver Peck(er)
Last week I continued my journey and went from Stockholm, Sweden to Limerick, Ireland to meet up with Ross Nagle and Dale Turner at Allstar Tattoo. Ross is one of my favorite tattooers and his business partner and shop manager Dale is a one-of-a-kind-guy, I love them both! I have guest-spotted there a few times in the last year or so. I love it there it is an awesome shop and all the guys are the best! Ross Nagle is an amazing tattooer, if you are not familiar with him you should definitely check him out and get a tattoo if possible, he will be coming through the States a few times this year. Ross is coming to Dallas in late April to work with me a few days at Elm St. then we are heading out to the Fresno tattoo convention, he will also be working the State of Grace convention in October… (more…)

Oliver Peck: On the Road at the Helsinki Ink Tattoo Convention

By Oliver Peck(er)
Alright, I was at the 18th Helsinki Ink Tattoo Convention (TAT CON! As l like to call them). It was a great show and the people who put it on (Kimmo Rosti and Tony Raita) do a great job and do everything the right way, taking care of the artists, providing copy machine, thermofax and cute girls to operate them… And they know how to operate them, which is not always the case. They are both tattooers, Tony Raita tattoos at Otherside Ink and Kimmo Rosti tattoos at Vida Loca Tattoo…  (more…)

Horitaka: Give ‘Em A Hand Project

By Takahiro “Horitaka” Kitamura
When I think about good tattooing, I think of art executed by skilled craftsman. In an era of chain stores and mass production, it is always refreshing to see something hand-made. I met Jamie from RePop through my good friend Chris Yvon. Chris told me about Jamie and RePop, and the hand-made goods they produced. The product certainly lived up to the hype! Rings, buckles, wallets and more, all with old world craftsmanship, with some weight -no cheap materials, and a great retro feel…

Montreal Art Tattoo Show, On the Road in Canada

By Jesse Dolphin
Hello fellow tattooer and close followers. TAM just took part in one of the smoothest running conventions this year. Montreal is a beautiful city with its fair share of beautiful tattooed people. The convention was held a the Gare Windsor, a remodeled, beautiful old train station with the natural lighting and its open concept it gave a fresh and inspiring surrounding. Pierre and his wife Val have been doing this convention for a few years now and have an understanding of what makes a good show…

JTG: On the Road in Melbourne, Australia Part IX

By JTG
Things out here in the land down under are hustling. I have covered a lot of ground in Australia, but pretty much seen only the inside of tattoo shops, and bars… what?

All of the traveling over the past 80 weeks took a toll on me and for a while I thought it was gonna take me out. I was living such a solitary existence. When I got to Melbourne, I hadn’t tattooed in three months and I went to work for one of the best dudes in Australia, Trevor McStay…

Tattoo Artist Magazine: Rose Riot at NXNE and NIX

Despite an auspicious start my trip to Toronto to cover North by Northeast (NXNE) music festival and North Ink Exposure (NIX) tattoo convention was quite informative and enjoyable. NIX was my second convention and I was to learn how to run the TAM booth from the boothmaster John, as well as interview tattooers and cover music at NXNE. We embarked on this trip with less than a full night of sleep between us,  so by the time we made it to Canada we were what you might call, spent

Dan Smith: Sketch to Completion

By Dan Smith
I thought showing how I would attempt a tattoo from the reference stage to sketching, to completion, would be an interesting blog post for Tattoo Artist Magazine (TAM). As this is an industry magazine, and similar posts have been done on reference/inspiration and technique/execution, I know I am not “giving anything away” that isn’t already out there, but mainly showing how I would do it…

Northern Ink Exposure, on the Road in Toronto… Eh!

By John Niederkorn
Oh… Canada? The Northern Ink Exposure (NIX) ended a string of three successive tattoo conventions for me, which would explain this post’s extreme tardiness. It was my first time on Canadian soil and Kent had me super stressed about Canadian customs… Okay, lets get my story straight; “Hello, I’m here on ‘vacation’ and in no way will I be taking your crazy Monopoly money back to my country.”  Luckily for us North By Northeast (NXNE) was the same weekend as NIX so I had a built in excuse…

Ink ‘N Iron Tattoo Convention, On the Queen Mary in Long Beach (VIDEO)

By Kent Smith

I’m going to start this out by saying what an incredibly long week it was leading up to this convention. Crash, John and I all woke at 4 a.m. (well Crash and I did, I think John got up at 5 a.m.) to catch a flight from Atlanta to L.A. on June 3rd…

Milan Tattoo Convention: On the Road in Italy

By Kent

Ok, so this blog was supposed to be posted over a week ago, but I could not muster the strength or energy to get it done. It seemed that I somehow got brushed by the black finger of death while in Milan, with the worst illness I have faced to this day. I have no clue what this Italian funk was that I caught, but I do not wish that shit on my worst enemy… Well ok, maybe they too should be struck with it one day… (more…)

Star of Texas Tattoo Art Revival: On the Road from Austin, Texas

By John

It happened as soon as I landed in Austin, Texas. Not the Star of Texas Tattoo Art Revival- that would start the following day… however it didn’t take long to see some friendly faces, deep in the heart of Texas.

I was posted up in baggage claim, doing my normal multi-tasking: texting, listening to music, checking e-mails, playing Words With Friends (you know) the usual mindless activities while I waited for the baggage gods to release my personals. (more…)
