Icelandic Tattoo Convention 2013

222Story and photos by johndotcom
Iceland… Land of the Midnight Sun… In retrospect, ending a month-long European trip in a place that has 24-hours of sunlight was probably not the best idea I’ve had. However, despite the lack of sleep and the subsequent fatigue-jetlag-exhuastion-sleep deprivation-sinus cold I’ve had since returning to the States… I’d say it was well worth it… Before I continue, I just want to thank Össur, Linda, Thomas Asher, Olafia and everyone at Reykjavik Ink for making all the madness possible… (more…)

ROC City Tattoo Expo 2013

roc-0By johndotcom
There are only two things you need to know about the ROC City Tattoo Expo…

  • 1. If you are a tattooer, this show should be on your tat con list!
  • 2. If you are a tattoo enthusiast, this show should be on your tat con list!

Actually, there’s more to it than that… But just like me, that’s the tall and skinny of it… I cannot begin to thank Jet (Joseph DiProjetto, Love Hate Tattoo), Shane Stevens and the whole ROC Crew for making this experience better every time I come to Rochester…  (more…)

Megan Hoogland: Why in the Hell Do I Still Do So Many Conventions?

By Megan Hoogland
I’m sick, and I know why I’m sick. I was on the road for three weeks in a row and it was too much. I came home and came down with the plague as soon as I set foot in Minnesota. (I would like to say I’m allergic to this place but that would be an easy out.) This has happened before, so why do I do it? I have three kids and a shop and a house to take care of… It’s a lot and I know there are a lot of us in the same boat. Then throw tattooing and all that comes with that into the mix… (more…)

TAM News: Nicki Kasper Becomes Newest Member of TAM Family

TAM is proud to formally announce that Nicki Kasper is the new Project Manager at Tattoo Artist Magazine!

I’m always humbled by the people who have an expanded capacity to care and give selflessly to others. That is a rare quality in modern society, I’m sure you’ll agree. Nicki’s passion is helping others bring their projects to life and for more than a year she has given herself to the TAM project, asking (literally) nothing in return. No mere “booth-girl,” she is the owner of three successful companies of her own, has managed numerous gallery events, book projects, private wine labels, (and innumerable other projects), for some of the most respected tattooers in our community, and is now head of the New Project Division of TAM. I know she wouldn’t want me to mention these things, but I believe it’s important for the community to really know who she is and what she’s capable of. We’re proud to have her on the team… (more…)

Canyon Webb: 1st Annual Park City Utah Tattoo Convention Review

By Canyon Webb
Our flight left at 6:15 a.m. Thursday, still dark and half-asleep getting on the plane. The onset of pre-flight jitters and excitement of going to a new place fight the urge to sleep. It seemed like I closed my eyes and re-opened them to notice the reflection of the sun on a huge salty lake. We were here, and the landscape was scattered in jagged mountains, dirt and sagebrush. Down the escalator to the baggage claim as a black suited driver holds a sign that says Jeff Gogué, I turn to look at Jeff with a huge smile… (more…)

Larry Brogan: Scheduling Appointments and Taking Deposits

By Larry Brogan
Courtesy of Tattoo Road TripHow many times have you gotten excited about doing a big cool tattoo where you spend all kinds of time designing, hunting for reference images and hours of drawing a piece that you just know it’s going to be one of your best ever? You even get to the shop early and set up your station, and the next thing you realize, your appointment is 20 minutes late. After waiting around, losing your excitement minute by minute, you call the client’s number only to get voicemail. It’s then that you realize you have been stood up. At first, you are bummed, because you have been itching to do the piece, and then you realize that you just spent hours drawing, and all for nothing. Then you get pissed, because you will quite possibly have to sit on your thumb all day, doing nothing and making no money. Well, at least you took that $20-dollar deposit. Maybe you can buy lunch with it…  (more…)

Nicki Kasper: On The Road in Napoli, Italy (VIDEO)

By Nicki Kasper
There are times in our lives that we’re blessed with real experiences, the kind of experiences that can change us if our eyes are open to them. If you sit quietly and observe… If you can really take in what’s going on around you and reflect on it for a moment, you have a chance to see so much, and you have a chance to better yourself.

Tattoo Expo Napoli was one of those experiences for me, and I’m gonna go out on a limb, to a very vulnerable place for me and try to share some things about how it all made me feel… (more…)

Larry Brogan: Tattoo Convention Booth Set Up (Part I)

By Larry Brogan
Courtesy of Tattoo Road TripMost tattoo conventions provide a space for two working artists approximately 10’x10’ but they can vary by a couple feet in either direction. You will usually have two long narrow tables, one to tattoo from and a front table to showcase and display your tattoo portfolio, original artwork, paintings, prints, tattoo machines, t-shirts or any other items and promotional material you choose provided they are permitted by the promoters and local law… (more…)

4th Annual ROC City Tattoo Convention: On the Road in Rochester, NY

By Jimmy Perlman
Unfortunately I don’t get to most tattoo conventions anymore. I know and hear about tons of great shows all over the world. Fact is, I work in a field that has me traveling between six and nine months a year so when I’m home from work it would be a real shit move to tell my wife and kid “alright now I know I was gone for a month working but I’m gonna go to this city for the weekend and hang out with some friends, have a good time and get tattooed.” (more…)

Fear and Tattooing in Las Vegas…

By John Niederkorn
Las Vegas… Home of the perpetual Affliction t-shirt and unnecessary plastic surgery… Wait. Do I really wanna go down this road? Do I really wanna start like this? Well, let’s start again… Vegas; it’s as if Hollywood, Times Square and Wrigleyville all had a fat overpriced tourist baby! There, that’s better…

When Kent called me and said, “Hey, do you wanna go to Vegas for a week?” I cringed… and thought, “Wait until he sees those god damn bats!” There is no doubt that a week in Vegas would be just short of some kinda sick, demented self-suicide with a blackout blizzard of shame setting its course, heading straight for me… no stopping it, no preparation could help me weather that storm. Buy the ticket, take the ride… Let’s just hope I make it to the Mirage Hotel and Casino before those god damn bats do…

Dan Henk: Parasites of the Industry

By Dan Henk
I want to start out by being very clear that it is not all of them… not all, but there are way too many, and they are like a parasite in the business. What am I talking about? These people who don’t tattoo, yet have their sticky fingers in the business… (more…)

The London Tattoo Convention, On the Road in England

By Kent “I hate writing blogs” Smith
Oh London, how I love you. Every year for the past five years I have traveled the London convention, stayed at the same hotel with a family of friends and shared a booth with my good buddy Hunter Spanks. Every year I am so stoked that I have been able to pick up long-distance relationships with friends right on the spot and add some new ones. I’m not talking about just people from overseas, but folks right here in the states that I only get to see once a year across the pond. The friendships and relationships that we are able to build in our community are amazing. I am constantly impressed by the sense of camaraderie we have in this industry…
