Skin artwork was not a sign of rebellion but camaraderie at the L.A. preem of D&E’s doc “Tattoo Nation” on March 28.
“There’s just such great soul in these tattoo artist, and then if you have the talent, pass it on!” tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy said before the Arclight screening.
Actor Danny Trejo, whose tattoos include a family portrait of his children on his back, gets asked a lot about his ink: “People ask me if my tattoos have hindered my career. I say, ‘For the first five years of it.’ I played inmate number one. The only thing I heard the director say was ‘Danny, take off your shirt.’ “ (more…)

My uncle used to tell this story about when he was in the Navy… He and his small group of friends liked getting tattoos and talking about them. One shipmate in particular had an unusual tattoo, and he never wanted to talk about it. My uncle described it as a pig with a tree behind it, a bird in the tree and a moon in the sky. No matter how much coaxing, the sailor didn’t want to talk about it. Finally, one day he gave in and said, “Alright, you wanna know? It’s a ________________.”

It’s already August, and the tattoo convention I throw with Roman Enriquez (Strong Tattoo/45s Forever) is coming up soon! This year the convention in scheduled for October 21-23 and we are returning to the SFO Hyatt Regency. Even with last year’s power outage on Sunday, the hotel is perfect for us and we look forward to a great weekend. Here are some highlights of this year’s show…
I’m going to start this out by saying what an incredibly long week it was leading up to this convention. Crash, John and I all woke at 4 a.m. (well Crash and I did, I think John got up at 5 a.m.) to catch a flight from Atlanta to L.A. on June 3rd…
This has long been one of my favorite conventions each year and 2010 was better than ever. A million ‘Thanks’ to Horitaka and crew for doing such a fine job organizing and promoting the STATE OF GRACEshow (as usual) and for taking such good care of TAM and all the attending artists/vendors.
On Sunday evening, following the power outage at our hotel (more on that later) and early-ending to the convention, my partner Kent Smith, friend Hunter Spanks and I all shared my usual sushi and sake (cold, unfiltered) celebratory dinner at the very fine Barracuda Japanese Restaurant.

During the meal we each discussed our favorite aspects of the weekend. It was an interesting exercise and this blog entry is the result. I hope it proves entertaining to readers. (more…)
