Just Eat It: Baked Penne with Roasted Garlic Sauce

By Stiff
My inspiration for cooking can come from a variety of things. Sometimes I get inspired by having a dish from a restaurant that I’ve never had before and try to replicate it at home. Sometimes inspiration comes from recipes I may see on television. I mostly get inspired by the certain items I see in the grocery store or farmer’s market.

Sometimes I fail at the outcome of what I’m making and sometimes I succeed. I just like to try new things and expand my horizons when it comes to testing new ingredients or cooking methods. James, my fiancé is a great guinea pig. He will generally eat whatever I make and is honest about how the food tastes. Unlike James, I myself am much more critical about how my food turns out. (more…)

Gunnar Gaylord: A Change in Direction and an Addition of Goals

By Gunnar Gaylord
Last year I had the good fortune of attending two amazingly inspirational conventions, that put me on the path to a brand new year in art. I had blogged on both events at the time, those being Paradise Gathering in Massachusetts and Hell City Phoenix. And I have to say the fact that it was in Phoenix, may have a more profoundly symbolic meaning, then it was meant to. However, from these events was born a new passion in art, one that I hadn’t had in years… (more…)

There are so many things going on around any given person at any given time today in our world. It can be easy to become bombarded by media such as news, Internet and television. It can feel like the world is flying past you in fast forward while you are struggling to check things off of your list. Larry Brogan: Scheduling Appointments and Taking Deposits

By Larry Brogan
Courtesy of Tattoo Road TripHow many times have you gotten excited about doing a big cool tattoo where you spend all kinds of time designing, hunting for reference images and hours of drawing a piece that you just know it’s going to be one of your best ever? You even get to the shop early and set up your station, and the next thing you realize, your appointment is 20 minutes late. After waiting around, losing your excitement minute by minute, you call the client’s number only to get voicemail. It’s then that you realize you have been stood up. At first, you are bummed, because you have been itching to do the piece, and then you realize that you just spent hours drawing, and all for nothing. Then you get pissed, because you will quite possibly have to sit on your thumb all day, doing nothing and making no money. Well, at least you took that $20-dollar deposit. Maybe you can buy lunch with it…  (more…)

Durb Morrison: Tattoo Artists, Loosen Your Belts While You Are Tattooing!

By Durb Morrison
I have been tattooing for 22 years of my life currently and have tattooed nearly everyday over the last two decades. Throughout my career, I’ve had many of the common physical discomforts that us tattoo artists get like back aching all the time, forearm pain, numbness in my hand, fingers and forearm, even right ear hearing damage from machines running close to my ear daily. I’ve also worked in a lot of different places… some with the luxury of nice chairs, and some (like conventions) where I was completely folded in half, and leaning forward to get to the client’s tattoo. I twist to the right everyday to dip ink, and grab soap and ointment all while wearing a thick leather belt. The thick belts that I wore and my repetitive twisting while tattooing over the last two decades are what lead to the permanent nerve damage I now have in my left leg…  (more…)

Larry Brogan: Tattoo Convention Booth Set Up (Part I)

By Larry Brogan
Courtesy of Tattoo Road TripMost tattoo conventions provide a space for two working artists approximately 10’x10’ but they can vary by a couple feet in either direction. You will usually have two long narrow tables, one to tattoo from and a front table to showcase and display your tattoo portfolio, original artwork, paintings, prints, tattoo machines, t-shirts or any other items and promotional material you choose provided they are permitted by the promoters and local law… (more…)

Guen Douglas: How To Avoid Tattoo Plagiarism

By Guen Douglas
It’s been so long since I’ve last written. so much has been going on in my life; a move from Amsterdam’s Salon Serpent to Brighton’s Magnum Opus and a couple of conventions back to back after the move (Brighton and Milan) have kept me busy. But I’m back with a few ideas for upcoming TAM Blogs, so keep posted.

This month’s TAM Blog was inspired by one of my client’s tattoos that keeps being copied…  (more…)

Gunnar Gaylord: How to Improve Creativity, Growth and Confidence

By Gunnar Gaylord
I recently posted a short list of rules on Instagram that I found to be helpful with my art. I received a lot of positive feedback and it seemed like something that people wanted to hear… Maybe even needed to hear. I know personally that after 15-plus years making a living with art, I have had major lulls in creativity, growth and confidence…  (more…)

Gunnar Gaylord: How to Create an Individual Tattoo Style

By Gunnar Gaylord
I decided to write a blog a bit different from the earlier ones. I thought maybe I would touch on a topic that may help aspiring tattoo artists. I am often asked in interviews and by individuals, how I created a unique style. So here is a concise breakdown.

As a disclaimer I will inform you that the information I am going to share is based not on what may be deemed “correct,”  it is however the way in which I formed my style. I hasten to say that at times I fall short on artistic academic knowledge. However, as an artist, I know that the style I created is unique and hence feel that this is something I have the knowledge to discuss…

Guen Douglas: The Process of Getting a Custom Tattoo

By Guen Douglas
A fantastic time at the Montreal tattoo convention and a week and a half guest spot Ottawa’s 5-Cents tattoo have inspired me to write about this months topic: Custom Tattoos: The Process…

I had a no-show during my guest spot at 5-Cents. This client had been asking to get tattooed by me for a whole year (since last year’s convention). We emailed back and forth. discussed her idea and she sent me photos of where she wanted it placed. We also both expressed excitement. The last time I heard from her was a week before the appointment. She sent me one final “can’t wait ’til next week” e-mail. The day of the appointment rolled around and there was no sign of her, no email and she did not answer her phone or call me back to ease my worry about her being in a ditch on the highway. Not even for a moment did I think that this client wouldn’t come to her appointment…
