Motor City Tattoo Expo: On the Road in Detroit

By John

The Motor City Tattoo Expo holds a special place in my heart. This convention (four years ago) was the very first convention I worked for Tattoo Artist Magazine. I had no clue what I was doing! Crash mostly abandoned me that first year, like a newborn gazelle, I was thrown to the “tat con” wolves and had to get on my feet and start running. But I guess there’s no better way to figure out how to survive than sink or swim… (more…)

Dan Sinnes Article Preview for Tattoo Artist Magazine Issue #24

Wido de Marval: So you spent some time in Barcelona.  Do you remember where you went? For different guest spots? You went to The States?

Dan Sinnes: Yeah, but I still stayed in Luxembourg a lot. Because I still had a girlfriend at the time, and two dogs. But when I had the opportunity to do guest spots, I’d do it. After I had my break-up and I was by myself, I put it to the max and I went to the United States and traveled as much as I could, alone. (more…)

Jason Tyler Grace, On the Road: Part II

January 25, 2011

I have now been homeless for over a year…

I am in a coffee house in Tokyo, Japan as I write this. A coffee is about five-fucking dollars. I managed to find one of the cheapest places to sleep in Tokyo and it is $33 dollars a night. I don’t have a lot of money, so living on the cheap is a must and it is a serious challenge in the Land of the Rising Sun. (more…)

Jason Tyler Grace, On the Road: Part I (Photos)

Last year I decided that I wanted to leave the States and try to travel around the world. I sold pretty much everything I owned and I have been traveling in South America for 11 months now. In the beginning I was traveling with a girl and was not as focused on tattooing as I am now, tattooing was always meant to be a huge part of the trip (the main focus) to see if I could make it around the world, working as I went. But pussy has a strong pull on a man… (more…)

State of Grace Tattoo Convention, San Francisco: PART II

By Crash

To continue with my list of highlights from the SF show… It’s always a treat seeing Thom deVita and, as usual, finding him in the hotel lobby every morning by 7a.m. (He and I are commonly the only people stirring at this hour). Sitting with Thom and listening to a few of his stories each morning was a real treat.

The first morning I asked him what he was doing…”Are you people-watching?”

“Lady-watching,” he said, with a wry grin.

DeVita also sold some of his art (which we will soon be featuring on the TAM site) and he did several tattoos on some devoted tattooers over the weekend. (It was the first time I’d seen him wear gloves!)

State of Grace Tattoo Convention, San Francisco: PART I

By Crash:

This has long been one of my favorite conventions each year and 2010 was better than ever. A million ‘Thanks’ to Horitaka and crew for doing such a fine job organizing and promoting the STATE OF GRACE show (as usual) and for taking such good care of TAM and all the attending artists/vendors.

On Sunday evening, following the power outage at our hotel (more on that later) and early-ending to the convention,  my partner Kent Smith, friend Hunter Spanks and I all shared my usual sushi and sake (cold, unfiltered) celebratory dinner at the very fine Barracuda Japanese Restaurant.

During the meal we each discussed our favorite aspects of the weekend. It was an interesting exercise and this blog entry is the result. I hope it proves entertaining to readers. (more…)
