Jondix Tattoo Artist Magazine Issue #29 Article Preview (Pre-Order Now Available)

Interview by Beppe Strambini

Beppe Strambini: There are a like a bunch of new tattooists that are very recognizable and you are one of them and there’s like a connection between all you guys… It looks like a family… can you talk about them… Xed, Hooper, Freddy, Filip…

Jondix: Xed, I was his customer many years ago and we become friends. He visited Barcelona every once in a while, we even did holidays together in Athens… He played the Tibetan conch at one of our concerts. He can do continuous breathing from didgeridoo. He’s fantastic. The king of psychedelic. He was the pioneer of dot work… the source… rotaries, patterns, e-Bay… Last year I gave him a gift -it was a tongue depressor with a natural hole on it, and I think he got pissed off? He’s a real artist… We have a big dialectic gap between tattooists… And I’m still not used to it…

Interview by Scott Sylvia

Scott Sylvia: And then from New York you came to Oakland?  How did you get the fuck to Oakland?

Jason McAfee: Well, when I was at Flyrite the phone rings. This was the most magical moment of my life. Chops answers. And he’s talking to someone. And he holds the phone like this, like totally tight and quiet and he says, “Dude, it’s Freddy Corbin for you.” I had met Freddy and we had talked a little about things because we just bonded and liked each other. Freddy called me out there and I think maybe Alison had sprinkled some things in his ears about… “Jason wants to get out of L.A.” I didn’t know where I was going. I just was in L.A. and I went to New York, “Do I go back to L.A. I don’t know?”

Jay Brown: 28 Machine Builders Part IV of IV

By Jay Brown
As a machine builder these are some of the things I look for in a machine. And I am not saying that this is it, the gospel, this is just the way I look at it. So the other day I thought to myself, “Man, this would make a great article.” As I started listing candidates for the article I found that the list got long really fast. Thus, I decided that I would stop at 28, because it’s as good of a number as any, and it was enough for a broad spectrum of builders. So here it is, 28 tattoo great machine builders… (If I missed anyone don’t be offended, it’s nothing personal, I just had to think of space. Maybe there’ll be additions in a future article?) So without further ado here they are, starting with historical builders, because they were the pioneers and should be recognized first, (plus I’m a history buff) and then moving to present day. Again this is not a Top 10 list, just a list of great builders, hope you enjoy…

Horitaka: Give ‘Em A Hand Project

By Takahiro “Horitaka” Kitamura
When I think about good tattooing, I think of art executed by skilled craftsman. In an era of chain stores and mass production, it is always refreshing to see something hand-made. I met Jamie from RePop through my good friend Chris Yvon. Chris told me about Jamie and RePop, and the hand-made goods they produced. The product certainly lived up to the hype! Rings, buckles, wallets and more, all with old world craftsmanship, with some weight -no cheap materials, and a great retro feel…

Beppe Tattoo Artist Magazine Article Preview for Issue #25

Beppe: First tattoo shop was my tattoo shop, Ink Addiction. I know it sounds weird in some ways, but where I live there was no way to get a proper apprenticeship. It’s such a small town and nobody would give me any help.
