Rollo & Me Comic #3

The “Rollo & Me” strip is a series of stories told by Keith Underwood and illustrated by Dan Henk which appear regularly in Tattoo Artist Magazine. They chronicle Keith’s experiences living with and working alongside one of tattooing’s greatest icons of the 20th century- Mike ‘Rollo Banks’ Malone. Mike departed this life in 2007 but these stories represent Keith’s healing process and are figuratively supposed to occur on the couch of his therapist. Enjoy. There’s more to come. Tattoo Artist Magazine Issue #25: 2011 SXSW Review

By Rose Riot South By South West (SXSW) is a 10-day film, music and interactive conference that happens every year in Austin, Texas since 1987. It has been the career starting place for many musicians and a place for bigger name musicians to play for intimate crowds. SXSW has been on my “bucket list” for many years. My only reservation was that I would need to have help with the 15-plus-hour drive. As long as I could get help, I would do it. Luckily, I found the world’s best co-pilot, my friend Jen. I picked her up on Tuesday morning and we set out for what could be no less than a rock and roll adventure. Read More »

Mike Ness Interview: Tattoo Artist Magazine Issue #23

“If you don’t have roots, you don’t have shit…” -Mike Ness By Crash and Jimmy Perlman. Photos by Rose Riot.     Crash: All right Mike- You’ve been getting tattooed for a long time, so this isn’t a fad thing for you…and one thing I’ve noticed about younger bands is that they tend to just pop up fully tattooed- it’s like ‘instant street cred’ or something… Mike Ness: That’s commonly referred to as a “Visa Sleeve.” [Laughs] Right. Yeah. It’s kind of a strange thing to see.  But tattoos have been a real part of your life for a long time, and I’m sure you’ve documented many important events in your life through them.  I think it’s more just, you know, things that I like and things that inspire me, more than historic things, I think. For me personally, it’s been more like things that are reflections of me, or things that are in my life. Right. Can you tell me about the first tattoo you ever got? And if you remember who did it, and what it was, et cetera? I remember the first tattoo. I don’t remember the artist. But it was at Bert Grimm’s, at the Pike. I was 17, you know, and I drank five beers before I went in [laughs]…and I got this heart right here, and this banner—which I designed myself—and like a typical teenager, I wrote Heartbreaker across it. [Laughs] Like, yeah, beware girls—I’m a heartbreaker. You know what I mean? And back ... Read More »

Jason Tyler Grace: On the Road in Vietnam Part VI

You’re in Hue –this is the center of Vietnam, the halfway point, this is the place where the North and South were separated during the war. The North was Charlie, the Vietcong. The South was with the U.S. and the puppet governments the U.S. were funding. You’re here and it’s kind of cool, but not too cool, grey but not too grey and it’s a bit quieter than Hanoi, which screamed out with energy, horns, touts and chaos. Read More »

Dave Waugh: Work in Progress (By Hunter Spanks)

By Hunter Spanks When Crash asked me to write for the TAM Blog I said, “Yes, of course.” Then it hit me; “Now I have to think of what to write about?” Well, I am happy to say that with a little patience it has fallen into my lap. Elizabeth, (Lizzy) who works the counter at Have Fun Be Lucky where I currently tattoo, announced she was going to get her back tattooed by Dave Waugh… –jealousy came to mind. Read More »
