Russian Prison Tattoo Artist, Nikolai: pt1

Screen shot 2015-10-14 at 3.31.26 PM

Russian criminal tattoos were originally simple and decorative, with no real meaning to them. Later on, they were regarded more seriously when tattooed people, bearing symbols of strength on their bodies, started claiming leadership. Tattoos then became a kind of secret language because criminals needed a form of communication both in and out of prison. The meanings of criminal symbols were dictated by necessity and over the years there were revisions and re-evaluations of drawings. Gradually tattoos began to convey the social attitudes and values of their bearer. For example, if there are hexagonal or octagonal stars tattooed on a convict’s shoulders, it means that in prison, he’ll join those who are against prison regulations. If there is a hand grasping a knife tattooed on the leg, then it will be clear for those who know the symbols that this man was convicted for being a thug. Criminals often flaunt these attributes and their tattoos, which help them to separate themselves as “initiated persons” from the rest of the “lames” (fools). Tattoos can be classified as ornamental, professional, artistic, pornographic, religious, historical, symbolic, and abbreviations. There are many tattoos, worn by both men and women, of historic events with all sorts of inscriptions of tsarist Russia and of the Soviet period. Tattoos meanings also differ depending on what part of the body they are on. The criminal tattoo is generally called “nakolka” (derivative from the word “to pierce”), and its bearers “sineva” – “the blue ones” (due to the faded blue ... Read More »

You Decide, Trick or Treat? 13 Halloween Tattoos

Darcy Nutt of Chalice Tattoo in Boise, Idaho

Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, has its roots  in a pre-Christian festival from about 2,000 years ago which was held in the beginning of November. The festival was called Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”). Samhain, means “summer’s end” in Gaelic. Now, the opposite of that is, Samhainophobia, which is the fear of Halloween or the fear of the festival of the dead. Hard to imagine someone fearing the Festival of the Dead, after all, what could be more normal than dead people having a festival?  While there remains some debate with folklorist and historians about the exact origins of Halloween, one thing is for sure, if is started some 2,000 years ago and we are still celebrating it, All Hallow’s Eve deserves some special attention! Women Cover Mastectomy Scars with Beautiful yet Intricate Tattoos

Screen shot 2015-10-09 at 12.19.14 PM

When diagnosed with breast cancer, being introduced to the world of tattoos is the last thing on one’s mind. But for many women who are suffering from this disease, this is exactly what happens after the worst has passed. What these women are left with is a painful reminder of the trauma they’ve suffered. —  If not for all, some of the women who’ve had mastectomies choose to use tattoos, not as their treatment, but rather, their recovery. This year in May, a tattooist from Darwin, Australia shared pictures of a client whose had mastectomy as well as reconstruction of both her breasts, and decided to completely cover her breast with a flowery tattoo that transformed her scars into a work of art. However, tattoos can still make a lot of difference in the lives of women who’ve had mastectomy and decided against reconstructive surgery. Liz Howley, a 73 year old woman from Edinburgh, Scotland had a mastectomy in 2006. After her surgery, she struggled a great deal when trying to come to terms with the way her body looked now. “I hated looking at myself in the mirror, and I didn’t like my husband to see me without my clothes on,” she said. “It was a constant reminder of what had happened to me.” But after watching a show about tattoos, she began to wonder whether having one would make a difference. “I spoke to my consultant and he said sure, go ahead,” she says. “So I found a ... Post-Mastectomy tattoos: “I wish I could walk around topless” by Reina

Screen shot 2015-10-01 at 12.11.37 PM

My journey began 3 weeks before my 40th birthday. I scheduled a mammogram because in my opinion, I have medical insurance and when you turn 40 as a woman and you have children, it is important to take care of yourself so you can be around to see your children grow and blossom into the great people they are meant to be.  The Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I visited a breast care specialist. She examined me but could not make an assessment as to whether or not the mass in my breast was a cancer mass or just very dense breast tissue. I was referred to mammography with the possibility of an ultrasound and possibly a biopsy. December 6th, the eve of my 40th birthday party, I did end up having the full exam, including a biopsy. The radiology doctor told me it didn’t look good… Even after that I continued to tell myself it was nothing until they told me otherwise, so I continued to live life as normal, including celebrating my birthday with friends and family the next night. You may be asking “where is your husband during all of this?”. Well, the mammography appointment I honestly believed was going to be a piece of cake so I did not invite him to the appointment. Once I told him there was actually a biopsy, he cried. My response to that? “Please don’t plan my funeral yet. First we don’t know anything yet, so don’t go dark. Second, don’t plan ... Read More »

P.INK DAY 2015: Announcing Cities & Artists for Survivors of Breast Cancer

P.ink day 2015

Announcing that P.ink Day 2015 is coming to 13 North American cities on the weekend of October 10. This year we’ve enlisted 45 artists across our network to ink mastectomy tattoos for 45 remarkable breast cancer survivors. WHAT IS P.INK DAY? P.ink Day (“pea-ink day”) is our all-volunteer day of healing with ink. And more: it’s our make-a-wish day focused on an amazing experience for breast cancer survivors, which culminates with a mastectomy tattoo to help survivors reclaim some of the personal property that breast cancer stole. THREE YEARS RUNNING P.ink created the first P.ink Day in October 2013 with ten artists and ten survivors at Saved Tattoo NYC. It was incredible. [Check the video.] Last year our second P.ink Day spread to 13 locations across North America, with 37 artists. Again, stellar. [Read more.] This year we’ve grown with 45 artists across our trusted network and 45 survivors in 13 cities listed below. Turning My Mastectomy Scars into Art

Screen shot 2015-10-09 at 12.13.46 PM

I have always loved tattoos. Shortly after my 18th birthday, I walked into a tattoo shop filled with courage and a bit of cockiness. After studying the wall of images, I confidently pointed to a small cartoon devil named “hot stuff” and said, “Perfect!” Many people ask whether or I not have any regrets about my first tattoo, but, honesty, I don’t. 23 years later, I look at it and smile. It’s a part of my history, a personalized scar of sorts. Over the years, I have added other tattoos, so it’s no surprise to anyone that knows me that I decided to add one more. This one however, is the most meaningful piece of art I have ever added to my skin. It is a beautiful ending to a very difficult 6 years. Choosing to remove my healthy breasts because of my 87% chance of developing breast cancer is a decision I don’t regret for one minute. My BRCA gene mutation has forced me to make decisions that no woman should ever have to make.  By choosing this tattoo, it was an opportunity to turn my mastectomy into a work of art! After my mastectomy, I suffered complications with my reconstruction and endured an additional 4 surgeries. I was not interested in another operation to recreate nipples that would never look, feel or work like my real ones. That is when I knew that I was going to do things differently. My search for a tattoo artist was a ... Read More »

Jack Rudy – Photo Gallery of Black & Grey Masterpieces

Screen shot 2015-08-26 at 5.10.28 PM

Jack Rudy is an American tattoo artist notable for his reinvention of the ‘Black and Gray’ style of tattooing, realistic portraits, and single-needle use. He is considered to be one of the top tattoo artists in the world. After leaving the Marines in 1975, Rudy began his career as an apprentice at Goodtime Charlie’s Tattooland, in East Los Angeles. Under the watch of Charlie Cartwright, a friend of his he had met while visiting the Old Long Beach pike while on leave from the USMC Logistics Base in Barstow CA, Rudy and Cartwright began to hone their craft of single-needle, Black and Gray style tattoos. Simultaneously creating a whole new subgenre of modern tattooing and raising the proverbial bar for many new emerging tattoo artists and artists in general. His very distinct and distinguishable style is renowned for its masterful use of light and dark shades of varying degrees of black and grey. In addition to creating a softer and more realistic style of tattooing, with the advent of the new single needle tattoo technology artists were now able to use a much greater level of detail than previously attainable utilizing older and more readily accepted tattoo machine and needle configurations. As the client base of East Los Angeles began requesting this ‘penitentiary-style’, the pair decided to create a single-needle configured tattoo machine. Jack Rudy can be found at Good Time Charlie’s Tattooland in Anaheim, CA. (From the full article as seen in Tattoo Artist Magazine #25)  Get it HERE for $14.99     OR ... Read More »
