Blackwork is pushing dotwork and linework to the extremes, with massive black tint areas, complex geometrical and symmetrical patterns influenced by Polynesian tattoos and graphic art. It focuses on the design, mostly ornamental, rather than the meaning or realism. From minimal to extremely intricate, blackwork tattoos are standing out. Interview with a Borneo Hand Tap Tattoo Master

“Two sticks. That’s all the equipment you need to tattoo by hand.” – Jeremy Lo, hand tap tattoo master. Sitting on the terrace of a traditional long house overlooking the Borneo rain forest, Brighton based tattooist Fade FX is chatting with world renowned hand tap tattooist Jeremy Lo. Fade FX is the only UK tattooist trained in the ancient art of Borneo tribal hand tap tattooing. She revisited the Borneo jungle in 2015 with film maker Tom J. Kelly to document the last of the Iban Head Hunter tattooists, meeting with former teacher and tattoo master Jeremy Lo to document and discuss the intricate technicalities of hand tap tattooing. “You have two sticks. One has needles tied at the end, while the other works as a hammer. The size and length of the sticks depends on which part of the body you’re tattooing. It’s like using a machine with different needles, different tubes and different throw depending on what and where you’re tattooing.” Fade first went to Borneo in 2008 specifically to train under Jeremy, learning the techniques and procedures of hand tap tattooing and has since returned regularly, each time learning a bit more to perfect the technique while living in the rainforest with members of the Iban tribe and simultaneously learning about their culture and tattooing heritage. Jeremy paved the way for tattooists like Fade, encouraging the Iban tribal elders to open up to outsiders and share their secrets. The process of gaining their trust is described as ... Read More »

Spotlight on Nikko Hurtado

For those of you living on Mars, Nikko Hurtado is an American tattoo artist who specializes in colored portraiture. Nikko was born in the San Fernando Valley of California in 1981 and began tattooing in 2002, eventually starting his own tattoo parlor, the Black Anchor Collective in Hesperia, California. Working primarily in oils, Nikko debuted a series of paintings at the Corpro Gallery in Santa Monica, CA to acclaimed reviews. When he looks at everything it took to get to that point he realizes he wouldn’t be where he is now without the dedicated help of his wife Joanne, “Everything I have done was only possible because of her help.” Sadly, after a lustrous career with his tattoo machine, the wizard of realism announced in April 2015 that he is hanging up his tubes.  Hurtado says “I’m sick of seeing teenage girls getting infinity symbols tattooed on their wrists, I did all that I could with a needle and now I’m pursuing a life of wellness—both spiritually and physically.”  Hurtado suffers from debilitating back pain and has decided to pursue other ventures. Nikko is and will always remain an icon in the tattoo industry and ... Read More »

Gross Infected Tattoos: The Signs and Symptoms

There’s a reason getting a tattoo hurts. The outer layer of your skin, which serves as your first line of defense against bacterial invasion, is destroyed in the name of body art. This is why fresh tattoos are susceptible to infection, which could easily destroy your tattoo before it’s even ready to be seen if it isn’t properly taken care of. Appropriate tattoo aftercare is the key to staving off infection, but every now and then even the best looked after tattoo gets infected by some inane freak accident of nature. Knowing the signs and symptoms of infection and catching it early is the best way to potentially save your tattoo and health before both are radically ruined. Inflammation – Fresh tattoos tend to feature a bit of swelling accompanied by a pinkish color around the tattooed area. However, if it started to look irregularly pink or red and feels warmer to the touch than the rest of your skin, then your tattoo may be infected. If it radiates heat for three days, seek medical attention ASAP. Swelling – A slight amount of swelling is normal. A large, uncomfortable amount is not. If you start seeing an increasing amount of swelling accompanied by pain outside the tattooed area, seek medical attention ASAP. Discharge – All tattoos produce ooze as the skin goes through the motions of healing itself, but that ooze should be clear and over with after about 48 hours. If it’s yellow or green and lasts longer than ... Read More »

This number represented a percentage of 21%, which had significantly increased from 14% and 16% in a survey conducted in 2003 and 2008 respectively. Geography In terms of geographical location, tattoos were more prevalent in the West; with about 26% of the individuals having tattoos. The remainder percentages were of the South at 18%, East at 21% and the Midwest at 21%. Make no mistake about it, the tattoo industry is hot property. There are an estimated 20,000+ parlors operating in the United States, according to a U.S. News & World Report article, which said, on the average, an establishment is being added in the country every day. The article ranked tattooing as the sixth fastest growing retail venture of the 1990s, right behind Internet, paging services, bagels, computer and cellular phone service. What do you think about your ink? Statistics of individuals with tattoos were also quite interesting, as about 86% of the sample ... Read More »
