By Petri Aspvik
Petri Aspvik: What type of physical problem have you encountered do to tattooing?
Marcus Kuhn: After 20 years I have pain in my number 11 acupuncture point just southeast of my right scapula as a result of the long swoop of lining and the repetitive pulse of the mag work. After four hours my shoulder becomes congested and starts to fill with fluid. like a nose when you are congested with the flu. The body is responding to the inflammation of the tissue by sending fluid to the area. At night my shoulder sometimes pulses with pain… The fluid takes three hours or more to drain. I have also lost a register of my hearing from the frequency of the ultrasonics and the running machines… (more…)

Interview by Beppe Strambini
Beppe Strambini: There are a like a bunch of new tattooists that are very recognizable and you are one of them and there’s like a connection between all you guys… It looks like a family… can you talk about them… Xed, Hooper, Freddy, Filip…
Jondix: Xed, I was his customer many years ago and we become friends. He visited Barcelona every once in a while, we even did holidays together in Athens… He played the Tibetan conch at one of our concerts. He can do continuous breathing from didgeridoo. He’s fantastic. The king of psychedelic. He was the pioneer of dot work… the source… rotaries, patterns, e-Bay… Last year I gave him a gift -it was a tongue depressor with a natural hole on it, and I think he got pissed off? He’s a real artist… We have a big dialectic gap between tattooists… And I’m still not used to it…

By Takahiro “Horitaka” Kitamura
When I think about good tattooing, I think of art executed by skilled craftsman. In an era of chain stores and mass production, it is always refreshing to see something hand-made. I met Jamie from RePop through my good friend Chris Yvon. Chris told me about Jamie and RePop, and the hand-made goods they produced. The product certainly lived up to the hype! Rings, buckles, wallets and more, all with old world craftsmanship, with some weight -no cheap materials, and a great retro feel…

Here is just one extraordinary example of our collective creative potential when it’s put into motion! The Gypsy Gentleman: Episode I is pretty amazing, and he did it all on his own dime. This is Marcus’ contribution to our community. Please read the article [below] we recently printed for this project in TAM #26. If you really ‘get it’ and want to help Marcus make more or spread the word, link The Gypsy Gentleman to your own site and blog. There’s another episode set to film in London this fall, but it won’t happen unless people, (primarily tattooers), sponsor and support it. These episodes will only get better as Marcus and his crew gain experience and a decent budget. Enjoy! -Crash

It happened as soon as I landed in Austin, Texas. Not the Star of Texas Tattoo Art Revival- that would start the following day… however it didn’t take long to see some friendly faces, deep in the heart of Texas.
I was posted up in baggage claim, doing my normal multi-tasking: texting, listening to music, checking e-mails, playing Words With Friends (you know) the usual mindless activities while I waited for the baggage gods to release my personals. (more…)

Something I’m very aware of is that I get to do a lot of work that the client didn’t ask for. I get away with doing tattoos on people that might be a good idea from a certain point of view (mine!), but I have to talk them into seeing what I see and make them believe it’s going to be great. The amount of self-confidence required for this in any other case, I would consider as arrogance, but it’s this firm belief that what I am trying to do will look good that allows me to get my ideas into their skin, so I’m left with the question, what am I? Artist, asshole or both? (more…)
