The Art of the Machine Charity Show

To Benefit the Children’s Burn Foundation

I am proud to announce the first annual “The Art of the Machine,” a charity event to be held July 11th 2014 in Downtown Long Beach at the Mai Tai Bar at the historic Long Beach Pike from 6pm – 2am.

The Art of the Machine will be a celebration of the Tattoo Machine with Custom Tattoo Machines to be auctioned off to Tattoo Artists as well as pieces by world renowned artists available to the public.

The Children’s Burn Foundation is the only known foundation that offers the Full Recovery Program for child burn survivors, locally, nationally, and internationally – a unique blend of medical care, psycho-social support services, and daily living support to help young burn survivors achieve their full potential.

The complex interplay of physical and psychological trauma resulting from severe burn injuries can profoundly affect the lives of children for years to come. Through the Foundation‘s full range of programs and services, young burn survivors receive new hope, a community of supporters who understand, and a chance at a full recovery.

Program services include:

  • Medical Care & Support for Physical Recovery
  • Family Emergency Assistance
  • Camps & Retreats for Child Burn Survivors and Families
  • Teen Support Group: Young Adult Burn Survivors & Supporters (Y.A.B.S.S.)
  • Child & Family Support Groups

The night will begin at 6pm with a silent auction closing at 10pm and then followed up with live music and some special surprises until 2am.

There will be a special program highlighting the event, its donors, and sponsors with an article on the history of the Tattoo Machine and special cover art by Tattoo Artist Josh Duffy available to all attendees.

If anyone is interested in participating or sponsoring, please contact Casey Keener at casey@tattooartistmagazine.com. We are still accepting Machine donations as well as art for auction to benefit the charity.

Current Sponsors Include: TatSoul, Eternal Tattoo Supply, Tattoo Artist Magazine, Tattoo Culture Magazine, Sullen Art Collective. Sponsorships are still available. Check out our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/ArtoftheMachine

Machine Builders currently committed include: Tim Hendricks, Union Machine, Chris Quidgeon, Dewey Smith, Mike Schaeffer, John Boyd, Cory Rogers, Paco Rollins and Brandon Lewis.

Tattoo Artists donating art include: Josh Duffy, Tom Berg, Scott Richardson and Tokyo Hiro.

We will also have a website up in June, roughly a month before the event starts with profiles on the Machine Builders and Artists as well as specs on the donated machines. Anything that does not sell the night of the event will be available on the sites e-store after the event for purchase.

Thank you for your support and I look forward to everyone getting involved in this special night to benefit kids in need! If we don’t, who will?

On the Road with Jacob Hanks: “Tattoo Nation,” the Movie

By Jacob Hanks

Reblogged from: http://tattooroadtrip.com/tattoo-nation-the-movie/

Danny-Trejo-239x300I am clearly not a film critic or member of the press, but I was fortunate enough to get invited to the private screening of the new film, “Tattoo Nation,” at the Arclight Theatre, in Hollywood, California. For a younger tattoo artist like me, it was a pretty big deal. If you have not heard of “Tattoo Nation,” it is a documentary, directed by Eric Schwartz and written by John Corry, about the “true story” of the black-and-gray tattoo revolution, and features several of the tattoo icons, many of whom I was exposed to, as a little boy, with my father, tattooing in Southern California. That is where the film takes place, when three unlikely tattooers—Jack Rudy, Good Time Charlie Cartwright andFreddy Negrete—came together to become the innovators of modern, fine-line, black-and-gray tattooing. The story, narrated by Corey Miller, addresses how the prison style that originated with young Mexican Americans has exploded into a worldwide phenomenon, giving rise to many new styles and pushing the limits of the popularity of tattooing as we know it today.

Interview by Tim Hendricks

Tim Hendricks: Do you plan on ever mellowing out with the traveling or do you want to keep going?

Lindsey Carmichael: I love it. I have to backtrack a tiny bit and say that I was at Gold Rush when these changes came about in my life, right after I turned 40. I was kind of feeling closed off and slightly alone in my life…  (more…)

Interview by Dan Sinnes

Dan Sinnes: What do you think about the new generation of tattooers? Like people who tattoo for three years and are amazing tattooers?

Steven Burlton: It’s just like we were talking about. They’re well on their way. Of course it’s way easier to get into it and the facets are all open now. There’s no limit to what you can get a hold of, as far as reference materials and supplies and stuff like that…  (more…)

Interview by Brian Kaneko

Brian Kaneko: So you do all Japanese tattoo art on people, but what others aspects of that culture do you use in tattooing? For example, how your studio is set up, how you interact with clients, etc. Also, what is your approach to a new client who will be starting a large piece with you?

Shad: My studio is a private studio by appointment only. First, the customer contacts me by e-mail, which is the easiest way to get in touch with me. We can talk about the design… (more…)

*UPDATE* True South: Jordan Teear Relief Party

Story by Aaron (Tex) Finnin and party photos by Casey Keener:
One month ago Jordan Teear and I were high-fiving in celebration of his first 24-hour Friday 13th super party completion. It was to kick off our long-awaited 4,000 mile summer ride from Los Angles to New York City to meet up with our buddy Oliver Peck. We spent the next 48-hours recovering from messed up sleeping schedules and wrenching the final details on our bikes before heading east. That Sunday the 15th of July the absolute worst wrench was thrown into our adrenaline plan. “We didn’t even make it to the freeway,” became Jordan’s favorite line as he chuckled and told the story of his broken legs and ankles numerous times followed by one of his token light-hearted jokes over the next three weeks… (more…)

Molly Skobba: Brynne Palmer

By Molly Skobba
I have not known Brynne Palmer for a long time, but I feel like I’ve known her for years already. I attribute that to her sweet and open personality. Her sunny disposition immediately puts you at ease and any intimidation seems to melt away. Brynne has been tattooing for almost eight years. She started out at Tattoo Mania in L.A. and currently works at Gold Rush in Costa Mesa, California(more…)

Molly Skobba: Pacific Soul’s Renowned Paulo Manabe

By Takahiro “Horitaka” Kitamura and Molly Skobba
I was really excited for Molly to meet Paulo and Blaise Manabe and even happier that she wanted to blog about my Hawaiian braddah! Paulo is an amazing artist, and an even more amazing person. I always work with him when I am in Hawaii and am continually impressed with his tattoos. He is a true master of the Polynesian-style (though he would never let you call him that) and is constantly working to improve his work. He is a great father and has the coolest kid ever. You can find him at Pacific Soul Tattoo or at Zippy’s…

Horitaka: Give ‘Em A Hand Project

By Takahiro “Horitaka” Kitamura
When I think about good tattooing, I think of art executed by skilled craftsman. In an era of chain stores and mass production, it is always refreshing to see something hand-made. I met Jamie from RePop through my good friend Chris Yvon. Chris told me about Jamie and RePop, and the hand-made goods they produced. The product certainly lived up to the hype! Rings, buckles, wallets and more, all with old world craftsmanship, with some weight -no cheap materials, and a great retro feel…
