Sean Herman: Tattoo Collectors (Part III)
By Sean Herman
This past Hell City I was fortunate to tattoo three different collectors. Collectors are a whole different breed of client getting tattooed. They are passionately pursuing specific tattooers, and getting pieces to signify the work from that tattooer, no matter what the subject matter of the piece is. That always makes it an honor to tattoo a collector. During the weekend I had some people who were close to me tell me, “Hey, you keep going on about how awesome it is that they love tattooing, how about you write a blog about the collectors, like the one’s you write about tattooers.” She was right, why didn’t I think of that. Genius. After Hell City, I decided to get a few of them together to tell us their stories, I hope you enjoy… [Part I] [PartII]

Dave Waugh: Work in Progress Session IV (By Hunter Spanks)
By Hunter Spanks
Getting a back piece is quite a commitment physically, mentally and financially. For all the reasons stated above this installment takes place a bit over a year ago. We knew Lizzy would not be able to come back for another session for quite a while so I held off submitting it to the TAM Blog. Little did we know that it would take so long. We hope to be on more of a regular schedule from here on out… (more…)
Taki and Molly Kitamura: Amsterdam Adventure
By Molly and Takahiro “Horitaka” Kitamura
We love Amsterdam! Taki had been commissioned to do a promotion for Bacardi Rum’s new flavor, and as part of the commission they flew Taki out there (with me in-tow) to do a few tattoos… (more…)

TAM News: Nicki Kasper Becomes Newest Member of TAM Family
TAM is proud to formally announce that Nicki Kasper is the new Project Manager at Tattoo Artist Magazine!
I’m always humbled by the people who have an expanded capacity to care and give selflessly to others. That is a rare quality in modern society, I’m sure you’ll agree. Nicki’s passion is helping others bring their projects to life and for more than a year she has given herself to the TAM project, asking (literally) nothing in return. No mere “booth-girl,” she is the owner of three successful companies of her own, has managed numerous gallery events, book projects, private wine labels, (and innumerable other projects), for some of the most respected tattooers in our community, and is now head of the New Project Division of TAM. I know she wouldn’t want me to mention these things, but I believe it’s important for the community to really know who she is and what she’s capable of. We’re proud to have her on the team… (more…)
Canyon Webb: 1st Annual Park City Utah Tattoo Convention Review
By Canyon Webb
Our flight left at 6:15 a.m. Thursday, still dark and half-asleep getting on the plane. The onset of pre-flight jitters and excitement of going to a new place fight the urge to sleep. It seemed like I closed my eyes and re-opened them to notice the reflection of the sun on a huge salty lake. We were here, and the landscape was scattered in jagged mountains, dirt and sagebrush. Down the escalator to the baggage claim as a black suited driver holds a sign that says Jeff Gogué, I turn to look at Jeff with a huge smile… (more…)
Taki and Molly Kitamura: A Tour of New York City
By Molly and Takahiro “Horitaka” Kitamura
New York City. I love this over-crowded, smelly, hot and humid oasis of culture, counter-culture, history, music and art. Horitaka, Horitomo, Drew Flores, and I flew out to give Horitomo’s seminar on Japanese back pieces that he did for The Bay Area Convention of the Tattoo Arts last year. It was a whirlwind of heat, walking, talking and eating… (more…)
Jeff Gogué: Tattoo Expo Napoli, What An Experience…
By Jeff Gogué
When I first agreed to attend the tattoo expo in Napoli, Italy… Honestly, I had doubts I would make it. It would be my third trip to Italy in less than a year. I, of course, am honored and grateful to be invited anywhere and would continuously be on the road if it wasn’t for my responsibilities at home. I love adventure and with an ever-present awareness of my own mortality, I want to experience as much as I can before the bell tolls. I wouldn’t call myself a thrill seeker. I hardly call myself a traveler, but I do what I can to make new friends and see new places. Napoli was a new place. Different than the places I’ve been before in so many ways… (more…)
Nicki Kasper: On The Road in Napoli, Italy (VIDEO)
By Nicki Kasper
There are times in our lives that we’re blessed with real experiences, the kind of experiences that can change us if our eyes are open to them. If you sit quietly and observe… If you can really take in what’s going on around you and reflect on it for a moment, you have a chance to see so much, and you have a chance to better yourself.
Tattoo Expo Napoli was one of those experiences for me, and I’m gonna go out on a limb, to a very vulnerable place for me and try to share some things about how it all made me feel… (more…)
Sean Herman: Jeff Ensminger Interview (Part II)
By Sean Herman [Editor's Note: To read Part I of this interview please click this link.]
One of my favorite [stories] from him was the story about him “tattooing” himself. It’s pretty amazing. I think Jeff is one of those great examples of someone who loves tattooing so much, they will do anything to be involved in tattooing… (more…)
Sean Herman: Jeff Ensminger Interview (Part I)
By Sean Herman
So what did I do that night? I get home, I got the needle, the india ink, the thread, and here I am trying to poke a cross into my hand. I am like a weenie little kid, and I don’t want to poke myself with needles, so I’m trying to do it, but it just didn’t seem to want to go in. So what made the most sense to me was, ‘How do you INJECT the ink into the skin?’ I couldn’t figure that out. I was like, ‘How’s a needle going to INJECT the ink?’ So the only thing that made sense to me was to get a syringe… –Jeff Ensminger… (more…)

Aubrey Trufant: The Rome Experience 2012
By Aubrey Trufant
First and foremost, I would love to thank Daniele “Ceyen” Hoang of Psycho Tattoo for extending the invitation and giving my brother Alex and myself an opportunity to come tattoo and explore Roma, Italia together. I would also like to extend great thanks to Francesco Giamblanco for his exceptional tour guide work and for his undying patience and love as a co-host. The welcome was warm and easy, as they were eager to keep us entertained, busy tattooing and fed! It seemed to come all so effortlessly, their actions spoke in volumes and resonated throughout the duration of our trip and experience with them. We appreciate you! (more…)
Sean Herman: Jason Reeder Interview
By Sean Herman
So I wanted to do something different with this TAM Blog. The past three tattooers I have featured on here had been tattooing for over 10 years. I think at that point, you are starting to hit your stride a bit. I wanted to feature a different tattooist, one who hadn’t been tattooing for a long time, to get a different perspective on why he was tattooing. With tattooing becoming so everyday, being saturated on television, in magazines, it’s created a different time in tattooing, and I wanted to see if people got into tattooing for different reasons now, as opposed to 10, even 20 years ago. (more…)
Health Issues With Tattooing (Marcus Kuhn)
Petri Aspvik: What type of physical problem have you encountered do to tattooing?
Marcus Kuhn: After 20 years I have pain in my number 11 acupuncture point just southeast of my right scapula as a result of the long swoop of lining and the repetitive pulse of the mag work. After four hours my shoulder becomes congested and starts to fill with fluid. like a nose when you are congested with the flu. The body is responding to the inflammation of the tissue by sending fluid to the area. At night my shoulder sometimes pulses with pain… The fluid takes three hours or more to drain. I have also lost a register of my hearing from the frequency of the ultrasonics and the running machines… (more…)

Owen Williams: Crystal Morey Interview
By Owen Williams
Anyone who has been to a tattoo convention of late, from Milan to Sydney may not have actually seen, but definitely would have heard the whirlwind that is Crystal Morey. Usually holding court at the Gomineko Books stall (an invaluable source of Japanese tattoo culture reference and hard-to-find, out-of-print rarities) while simultaneously translating and taking bookings for her Japanese tattoo cohorts. Aside from kicking butt, taking names and rolling dice at convention time, what is it that goes on in the life of the pint-sized Texas Tornado and number one Tiger Mama? (more…)
Rose Riot: Royal Thunder Album Review
By Rose Riot
Every year at the new year, I publish a list of my favorite rock shows for the previous year. This year, I titled my list, “I didn’t see it coming.” It was my top five live shows that I didn’t expect to love and did. On that list was the band Royal Thunder. They are fellow Atlantans like myself and I had been hearing for a couple of years some buzz about them through friends… (more…)
4th Annual ROC City Tattoo Convention: On the Road in Rochester, NY
By Jimmy Perlman
Unfortunately I don’t get to most tattoo conventions anymore. I know and hear about tons of great shows all over the world. Fact is, I work in a field that has me traveling between six and nine months a year so when I’m home from work it would be a real shit move to tell my wife and kid “alright now I know I was gone for a month working but I’m gonna go to this city for the weekend and hang out with some friends, have a good time and get tattooed.” (more…)
Molly Skobba: Brynne Palmer
By Molly Skobba
I have not known Brynne Palmer for a long time, but I feel like I’ve known her for years already. I attribute that to her sweet and open personality. Her sunny disposition immediately puts you at ease and any intimidation seems to melt away. Brynne has been tattooing for almost eight years. She started out at Tattoo Mania in L.A. and currently works at Gold Rush in Costa Mesa, California… (more…)
