Dave Waugh: Work in Progress Session V (By Hunter Spanks)

By Hunter Spanks
It’s June 27, 2012 and we are finally back in Georgetown. Lizzy is back in the saddle for session five on her back with Dave Waugh.

It has been almost a year since session four and truth be told I still have not submitted part four to TAM yet (it is up now). So I have hopes that I will get both of these to them pretty quick (that didn’t happen). The banter with Dave is great. We talk about a recent trip to Niagara Falls and being grilled by the border patrol on the way back in and Lizzy and I making up stories about us meeting on Christian Singles or that she was a porn star and that I met her on her site. It is now 1:36 p.m. and the buzzing of the machine starts and session five is underway…  (more…)

Fxck Cancer Fundraising Benefit at HB Tattoo

fuck-cancer-13By Thomas Morgan
What up y’all, for those who don’t know who I am, my name is Thomas Morgan from HB Tattoo in Southern California. As most of you already know, on November 21st the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum was taken away from all of us, doors locked forbidding access and collection taken hostage! The Amsterdam Tattoo Museum is the first museum that is totally dedicated to tattooing. It shows the world’s largest tattoo collection, collected by Henk (Hanky Panky) Schiffmacher. Fighting tooth and nail along side of Henk is his lovely wife Louise ‘The Queen’ Schiffmacher. In the midst of their year-long battle to save the Museum, Louise recently got news that she has liver cancer and needs a transplant. (Letter from Louise: http://ow.ly/gQj7f.) Now they need our support more than ever. That’s where we come in! We have recently teamed up with an Non-Profit Foundation based here in Huntington Beach, CA called “Fxck Cancer” a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Together, I think all of us in the tattoo community, along with Fxck Cancer can raise the funds needed to help out Louise, Henk and the Foundation…  (more…)

In Japan, Tattoos Are Not Just For Yakuza Anymore

japanese-subcultrual-center-logoBy Nathalie-Kyoko and Jake Adelstein (Original story appears on the Japanese Subculture Research Center’s (JSRC) website.)
Tattoos are as Japanese as sushi, samurai and yakuza but in recent years with the crackdown on organized crime (the yakuza), tattoos have become increasingly socially unacceptable while many younger Japanese and people living abroad have embraced tattoos as a fashion item. In December last year, the government of Saitama Prefecture submitted a bill to revise local ordinances to prohibit tattoos under the age of 18. A fine of up to 500,000 yen will be levied on the violators of the law. If a space is provided to tattoo on young people under 18, there is a fine of up to 300,000 yen for the tattoo parlor owners. If the law is passed it will go into effect February 1st, 2013. Japan has waged many fruitless wars in the past and the latest war is a war on tattoos. Kicking it off was the mayor of Osaka, Toru Hashimoto, the son of a yakuza boss, who as most yakuza are, was probably heavily tattooed… (more…)

Megan Hoogland: Why in the Hell Do I Still Do So Many Conventions?

By Megan Hoogland
I’m sick, and I know why I’m sick. I was on the road for three weeks in a row and it was too much. I came home and came down with the plague as soon as I set foot in Minnesota. (I would like to say I’m allergic to this place but that would be an easy out.) This has happened before, so why do I do it? I have three kids and a shop and a house to take care of… It’s a lot and I know there are a lot of us in the same boat. Then throw tattooing and all that comes with that into the mix… (more…)

Crystal Morey: William Thidemann Interview

By Crystal Morey
I just spent a couple weeks in Colorado, participating in the Paradise Gathering giving seminars and at Kaze Gallery in Denver, and I got a chance to sit down with one of Kaze’s owners William Thidemann. I love talking to William. His world is wonderfully black and white and he filters it through a well thought out canon of ethics that centers on respect and hard work. It is incredibly refreshing to come home to the states and find that it isn’t all reality TV and triple Big Gulps, there are still people there working to improve their lot and who inspire growth in those around them. William’s demeanor impressed me… his door seemed to be open to anyone who comes in earnest, be it a hot mess needing to cover up her old lover inspired tattoos, or younger tattooers looking for help with compositions and design. He was like minor royalty… ha-ha, like a duke. The Duke of Denver! But seriously I appreciate his pragmatic view of the world and his steadfast dedication to the code he lives by. Interviewing him was a treat… (more…)

Adventures in Amsterdam (Part II)

By johndotcom
We hit the ground running yesterday and before I even knew what was happening I was staring at some of the most amazing pieces of classical art in the world! Danny [Dringenberg] knows more about Amsterdam than most Dutch people… It blows my mind! Dan said, “You wanna go see the Rembrandts, bro?” I didn’t even know they were here… So let’s go to the Rijks Museum and check it out… [Part I] (more…)

Adventures in Amsterdam (Part I)

By johndotcom
Where do I begin… How do I begin? My thoughts are an amalgamation of jet lag, exhaustion and amazement. I don’t think I can describe with accuracy how incredible Amsterdam is after the first day. Thank god I took pictures! I’m staring out of Danny Dringenberg’s apartment window, the air is crisp and cool after an early morning rain with the sun breaking over a thin layer of soft white clouds, and all I can think about is how I can get off this computer and onto the streets. Streets bustling with bikes, scooters, trolleys, people and cars, which Teresa [Dringenberg] described as a “real life game of Frogger,” constantly having to duck and dive through this metropolitan maze of moving obstacles… It’s perfect, it’s beautiful and calmly chaotic at the same time… It’s Amsterdam!  (more…)

Sean Herman: Tattoo Collectors (Part III)

By Sean Herman
This past Hell City I was fortunate to tattoo three different collectors. Collectors are a whole different breed of client getting tattooed. They are passionately pursuing specific tattooers, and getting pieces to signify the work from that tattooer, no matter what the subject matter of the piece is. That always makes it an honor to tattoo a collector. During the weekend I had some people who were close to me tell me, “Hey, you keep going on about how awesome it is that they love tattooing, how about you write a blog about the collectors, like the one’s you write about tattooers.” She was right, why didn’t I think of that. Genius. After Hell City, I decided to get a few of them together to tell us their stories, I hope you enjoy… [Part I] [PartII]

Dave Waugh: Work in Progress Session IV (By Hunter Spanks)

By Hunter Spanks
Getting a back piece is quite a commitment physically, mentally and financially. For all the reasons stated above this installment takes place a bit over a year ago. We knew Lizzy would not be able to come back for another session for quite a while so I held off submitting it to the TAM Blog. Little did we know that it would take so long. We hope to be on more of a regular schedule from here on out… (more…)

TAM News: Nicki Kasper Becomes Newest Member of TAM Family

TAM is proud to formally announce that Nicki Kasper is the new Project Manager at Tattoo Artist Magazine!

I’m always humbled by the people who have an expanded capacity to care and give selflessly to others. That is a rare quality in modern society, I’m sure you’ll agree. Nicki’s passion is helping others bring their projects to life and for more than a year she has given herself to the TAM project, asking (literally) nothing in return. No mere “booth-girl,” she is the owner of three successful companies of her own, has managed numerous gallery events, book projects, private wine labels, (and innumerable other projects), for some of the most respected tattooers in our community, and is now head of the New Project Division of TAM. I know she wouldn’t want me to mention these things, but I believe it’s important for the community to really know who she is and what she’s capable of. We’re proud to have her on the team… (more…)

Canyon Webb: 1st Annual Park City Utah Tattoo Convention Review

By Canyon Webb
Our flight left at 6:15 a.m. Thursday, still dark and half-asleep getting on the plane. The onset of pre-flight jitters and excitement of going to a new place fight the urge to sleep. It seemed like I closed my eyes and re-opened them to notice the reflection of the sun on a huge salty lake. We were here, and the landscape was scattered in jagged mountains, dirt and sagebrush. Down the escalator to the baggage claim as a black suited driver holds a sign that says Jeff Gogué, I turn to look at Jeff with a huge smile… (more…)

Taki and Molly Kitamura: A Tour of New York City

By Molly and Takahiro “Horitaka” Kitamura
New York City. I love this over-crowded, smelly, hot and humid oasis of culture, counter-culture, history, music and art. Horitaka, Horitomo, Drew Flores, and I flew out to give Horitomo’s seminar on Japanese back pieces that he did for The Bay Area Convention of the Tattoo Arts last year. It was a whirlwind of heat, walking, talking and eating… (more…)
